First Frozen Yogurt Shops, Where Are They Now?

Time for your froyo history lesson. It’s hard to believe, but Pinkberry’s going to turn 20 years old in 2025. Many froyo shops have opened since Pinkberry started the second wave of froyo. We decided to look at what happened to the first shops of Menchie’s, Pinkberry, Red Mango, Tutti Frutti/Orange Leaf, and Yogurtland. All five of these froyo chains were founded in Southern California in the mid-to-late 2000s. The only “first” shop that’s still open is Menchie’s in Valley Village.

Froyo in Austria: History, Trends, & Shops

Today, nearly forty frozen yogurt shops can be found throughout Austria. All are counter-serve and many serve organic (bio) frozen yogurt. Many shops mention using local dairy products and also serve bubble waffles, drinks, and pastries. Most close during the winter and reopen in the spring (around March).

Valentine’s Froyo Specials

Many froyo shops decorate for Valentine’s Day and have special Valentine’s Day toppings and froyo. For example, Menchie’s featured flavor this month is Hershey’s Kisses milk chocolate froyo and Yogurtland is featuring Chocolate Hazelnut Lava Cake froyo, Chocolate Covered Strawberry froyo, and sour gummy hearts as a topping.

January 2024 Froyo Shop Openings & Closings

We’re still tracking froyo shop openings and closings worldwide. In January, we found 53 froyo shop openings in 16 countries, far less than December 2023’s 91 froyo shop openings and closings in 21 countries. The Philippines continues to lead with the most openings, eight in January, followed by Indonesia with six, and Malaysia with five. Llaollao had the most openings, with five in January. Anita Gelato opened its first branch in New Zealand.
