Froyo in Austria: History, Trends, & Shops

Foxy, Vienna. Source: Yelp

Gelato has a long history in Austria. It’s said that gelato arrived in Vienna in the 19th century. Frozen yogurt’s history in Austria is much more recent. The first froyo shops in Austria opened in 2011. By 2011, frozen yogurt was already popular in other European countries, so Austria was a relative latecomer to the froyo craze.

Austria in Central Europe has a population of 8.956 million. With Vienna as its capital, Austria has long been known for its architecture, arts, culture, and music. A nominal GDP per capita of $56,802 in 2023 is the 12th highest in the world.

History of Froyo in Austria & Current State of Froyo

In 2011, the first froyo shop, Foxy Frozen Yogurt, opened in Vienna, followed shortly by Kurt, which also opened in Vienna. Both were counter-serve shops that served tart/plain/natural frozen yogurt and a few other froyo flavors. Many froyo shops followed and some gelato shops also started offering froyo.

Today, nearly forty frozen yogurt shops can be found throughout Austria. There’s even a froyo shop in the building where Mozart was born. All the Austrian froyo shops are counter-serve. Many serve organic (bio) frozen yogurt made with local dairy. Many also serve bubble waffles, drinks, and pastries. Most of these froyo shops close during the winter and reopen in the spring (around March). International froyo chains haven’t had much success in Austria. Llaollao opened two shops in 2020 and they both closed in 2022.

Interestingly, the largest chain that serves froyo started as a juice shop. Kenny’s first opened in Vienna in 2016. Froyo has been on the menu since day one. Kenny’s currently has 17 locations in Austria.

We found four active froyo trucks and trailers that drive around Austria and attend festivals and events.
