July was a good month for froyo shop openings, though there were much fewer openings than in June (National Frozen Yogurt Month). We found 58 new froyo shops in 20 countries in July, compared to 87 new froyo shops in 25 countries in June. The United States had the most openings, with fourteen, followed by the Philippines with nine.

The IFYA Turns Ten
The IFYA turns ten! We’re currently over 3,000 members strong. Of our current members 43% indicated that they are current froyo shop owners or employees, 23% prospective froyo shop owners, 15% froyo fans, 11% other, and 9% industry suppliers. Our members represent 132 countries, with 71% of members from the US.
Froyo Trends: Rise of Sugar-Free Froyo Shops
There is an emerging trend of sugar-free and no sugar added froyo shops outside the US. Also, it appears that no sugar added shops might be coming to the US soon. These sugar-free froyo shops are particularly common in Mexico but have also emerged in other countries, namely with the growth of Yolé.

June Froyo Shop Openings & Closings
We found 84 new froyo shops in 25 countries in June 2023, compared to 61 new froyo shops in May 2023. It’s the most froyo shop openings we’ve seen since we started tracking openings and closings. The most openings occurred in The Philippines with eighteen, followed by the United States with thirteen.

A Look at Froyo Search Trends for National Frozen Yogurt Month 2023
Interestingly, the top U.S. search queries were very similar to the top worldwide search queries. The pattern of search traffic is remarkably similar for the United States (vs. worldwide) frozen yogurt search term over the past 5 years. It shows that the popularity of frozen yogurt did recover from the pandemic, with a stronger recovery in the US. Interest in frozen yogurt continues to be the highest in U.S., Canada, and Australia. And what’s driving the queries is the desire to find the froyo nearby.

An Update on Edible Cookie Dough
Now that over five years have passed, cookie dough shops were revealed to be a fad. While edible cookie dough is still around, it’s found in supermarkets, online stores like Doughp and The Cookie Dough Café, and inside shops that don’t primarily specialize in edible cookie dough. Big players like Ben & Jerry’s and Toll House now sell edible cookie dough. Baked cookie shops are now trendy – led by Crumbl Cookies, which opened 700 stores in six years, but rivals like Cookie Plug, Milk Jar, Tiff’s Treats, Chip City, Levain Bakery, etc. The trendy cookies are bigger and thicker.
