An Update on Edible Cookie Dough

Happy National Cookie Dough Day! Back in August 2017, we wrote about how edible cookie dough was the trend of 2017. It started with the opening of DŌ in NYC in January 2017. The shop was busy from day one, with people willing to wait hours in line for a scoop of edible cookie dough. Of course, many froyo shops had edible cookie dough for years, long before DŌ opened.

Interestingly, 16 Handles acquired DŌ, Cookie Dough Confections, in January 2023. DŌ was already offered at 16 Handles’ Manhattan locations.

Orange Leaf introduced Edible Cookie Dough froyo in 2019. Yogurtland introduced Cookie Dough froyo in 2021. Some SweetFrog locations offer edible cookie dough by the scoop.

Now that over five years have passed, cookie dough shops were revealed to be a fad. While edible cookie dough is still around, it’s found in supermarkets, online stores like Doughp and The Cookie Dough Café, and inside shops that don’t primarily specialize in edible cookie dough. Big players like Ben & Jerry’s and Toll House now sell edible cookie dough. Baked cookie shops are now trendy – led by Crumbl Cookies, which opened 700 stores in six years, but rivals like Cookie Plug, Milk Jar, Tiff’s Treats, Chip City, Levain Bakery, etc. The trendy cookies are bigger and thicker.

  • California Cookie Dough in Fountain Valley, CA was open from 2017 – 2019.
  • Cookie Dough Creations in Naperville, IL opened in 1994 and is still open. They also sell ice cream, sundaes, shakes, sandwiches, and cookies.
  • Do-Lish Bakery in Gainesville, Florida opened in 2017. The last Instagram post was in December 2019.
  • Dough Boyz, based in Buffalo, NY, started in 2017 and was rebranded as Dough Life in 2018. They sold a few franchises and opened locations in 2017 and 2018. The last Instagram and Facebook posts were made in July 2019.
  • Unbaked opened in Scottsdale, AZ in 2018 and is still open. They also sell ice cream and shakes. There is one location.

Three of the five shops/concepts have closed and the shops lasted a year or two. They closed even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Edible Cookie Dough Shops in NYC and Los Angeles

There are no edible cookie dough shops in NYC today, though some shops sell edible cookie dough (but not as their primary product). Even the flagship NYC DŌ shop is gone though they still have an online store.

Los Angeles has Cookie Dough Dreams, with shops in Burbank and Hollywood. Scooped Cookie Dough Bar Express just opened three locations in Los Angeles. Edoughble, which opened a shop in 2019 on Robertson in Los Angeles, recently closed the shop but their products are still available online.
