We’ve compiled a list of froyo shop openings and closings for the month of September. There were more openings than we expected. The closure of multiple locations of Menchie’s in Northeast Ohio and Erie, PA hurt since the announcement covered seven locations.

Openings

Anita Gelato, 1561 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10028, IG @anita_gelato_usa

Israel’s gelato shop, which also serves frozen yogurt, opened its NYC Upper East Side location on September 3. The Israel-based chain also has international locations in Australia and Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rico location opened this July.

BeFruit, Casa Central, Cordoba, Argentina, IG @befruitcba

BeFruit moved the Center Branch location to a larger space. The new shop opened on September 21.

Butterfield Market, 1150 Madison Ave, NYC 10028, IG @butterfieldnyc

Butterfield Market took over the old Dean & DeLuca location and opened on September 2. Yes, it’s a grocery store but they’re known for their froyo. Froyo is served from the Express Window.

Delicyous Real Yogurt, Los Mochis, Mexico, IG @delicyousrealyogurt

The grand opening took place on September 19. The counter serve shop features 100% natural, nonfat froyo.

Healthygurt, Park Point Cumbres, Monterrey, NL, Mexico, IG @healthygurt

Healthygurt opened at Park Point Cumbres Mall on September 26. This is their second shop.

JCO, Citimall Dumai, Bukit Datuk, West Dumai, Dumai City, Riau 28826, and Irian Supermarket & Dept Store Marelan, Medan City, Indonesia, IG @jcoindonesia

The multinational donut and froyo chain opened a new store in Dumai City, Indonesia on September 14 and at Irian Supermarket & Department Store Marelan, Medan on September 26.

Kona Ice Shop, 11 Main St., Winters, CA 95694, IG @thekonaiceshop

Kona Shaved Ice replaced The Scoop, the self-serve froyo shop. They still offer froyo. The soft opening was held on September 5 & 6.

La Yogurteria, Corso Matteotti, 51, Albano Laziale, Italy, IG @layogurteriapiazzameucci

The Italian froyo chain celebrated the new store on September 19 with free froyo and other festivities.

Llaollao, Imago Shopping Mall, KK Times Square, Phase 2, Off Coastal Highway, 88100 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, IG @myllaollao

Llaollao, the No. 1 Spanish yogurt in Europe and Asia, opened a new branch at Imago Shopping Mall in Sabah, Malaysia on September 15.

Llaollao opened a new outlet at the three-story Pearl Point Shopping Mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on September 23.

Minus14 soft opened on September 6. The new shop serves froyo, gelato and sorbet with toppings and kombucha.

Phuket’s only self-serve froyo shop moved to a new location in late September.

Turkey held a grand opening celebration on September 18 at Plaza Comercial Metropolis 2 in Ecuador and September 26 for Alborada. In addition to froyo, Turkey serves crepes and waffles.

Twisted Tulip Frozen Yogurt, 1550 W. Colony Rd. Ste A, Ripon, CA, 95366, IG @twistedtulipfrozenyogurt

Twisted Tulip opened on September 1. They describe themselves as, “Twisted Tulip is a self-serve frozen yogurt store. We will be rotating a variety of traditional, seasonal and fan favorite frozen yogurt flavors. Our self-serve frozen yogurt concept gives all our customers the opportunity to create their unique delicious, nutritious snack, meal or treat. No matter how you twist it or top it; no matter how big or small, the choice is yours. With up to 15 flavors and lots of toppings, the possibilities are endless.”

Yogoberry is (or was?) the largest Brazilian frozen yogurt and smoothie chain, founded in 2007. One of the founders was a nutritionist.

Another Yogorino branch has opened in Japan. The Italian gelato and froyo chain opened on September 4 at AEON Mall Makuhari Shintoshin in Chiba.

The Yogurt Shop & More, Ave Revolucion 3866 (Local 4), Col. Torremolinos, Monterrey, NL, Mexico, IG @theyogurtshopandmore

The new shop opened in Monterrey, Mexico in late September. The more refers to churros, elotes, waffles, Jalisco style snow, smoothies, etc.

Yogurtlandia, Corso Sardegna 263, Escalaplano, Italy, IG @yogurtlandia_san_vito

New Yogurtlandia, the Italian frozen yogurt chain, opened in Escalaplano (South Sardinia, Italy) on September 12.

Yooy, Av. El Retorno 21-16 y Los Incas, Ibarra, Ecuador, IG @yooycoffeeshop

Yooy started out as a froyo shop in 2012. The new shop, which opened in Ibarra, Ecuador on September 26, serves coffee and froyo.

Closings

Crazy For Yogurt, 4005 Manzanita Ave #39, Carmichael, CA 95608

Crazy For Yogurt’s Manzanita location had to close when they lost their lease in late September. The shop first opened in February 2015. The menu expanded over the years to include other desserts, including crepes, waffles, shakes, smoothies, shave ice and more. The Arden location in Carmichael was sold to new owners.

Kiwi Loco, 3198 S 25th E, Idaho Falls, ID 83404

The same family owned two locations in Idaho Falls (the one at 163 Houston Circle closed earlier). On September 4, the owners posted “It is with deep sadness that we let all of you wonderful people know that we have come to the very difficult decision to close our doors permanently. All of your love and support mores more to us than you will ever know. As I write this, I cannot help but cry because so many you become close friends. Much love to you all!”

Lovin’ Spoons, 479 Pooler Pkwy, Savannah, GA 31322

After 10 years, Lovin’ Spoon closed its doors permanently on September 27, 2020. The decision to close was announced on September 20. The owner, Diane Kahn, said ““I really am proud of what we created, there’s no doubt about that. Ten years is really kind of a record in this area for this business, so we have a lot to be proud of” in an interview with WTOC.

Menchie’s Northeast Ohio & Erie, PA

Menchie’s Northeast Ohio, which includes a location in Erie, PA, announced on September 21 that it would close all locations permanently, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Northeast Ohio locations closing include Avon, Boardman, Brooklyn, Fairlawn, North Canton, and Westlake. Menchie visited all the locations for a Meet & Greet recently and it turned out to be a farewell tour. The Wadsworth location, which is owned by a different franchisee, remains open.

My Frozen Spoon, 535 Tovrea Rd #104, Alvin, TX 77511

September 27 was the last day of business for My Frozen Spoon. The closing announcement said, “After 6 years in business we have decided to close our doors. Come by this weekend and say goodbye. We will always be thankful to the community of Alvin and our wonderful employees for 6 great years.”

Planet Yogurt, Sarit Center, Junction of Langata & Magadi Road, Nairobi, Kenya

Planet Yogurt announced the 1st floor shop at Sarit Center (Nairobi, Kenya) closed on September 30, with plans to move to the ground level.

Swirls & Twirls, 2945 Hempstead Tpk, Levittown, NY 11756

The Levittown Swirls & Twirls, part of the self-serve froyo chain with locations in NY, closed on September 8. The owners posted the following closing announcement: “Swirls and Twirls business has been affected by the COVID-19 virus for several months now. Unfortunately, it is with our deep regret after eight years we are closing our doors effective today, September 8, 2020. We would like to thank everyone for their support over the years.”

Yo Zone, 309 Huffman Mill Rd #410, Burlington, NC 27215

Yo Zone’s final day of business was September 20, 2020. The closing announcement said, “We wanted to thank our customers for supporting us for the past 10 years. Due to COVID and other restrictions put on the food service industry for the past few months, we have decided to close our doors permanently as of the end of the day today.”

Yogurt Beach, 3228 N Carson St, Carson City, NV 89706

After five years in business, Yogurt Beach closed the N Carson St. location in Carson City, NV on September 30. The announcement, made on Facebook on September 24, said, “It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we are closing this location. Due to the effects that Covid 19 has had on our business, we are forced to close the doors. The good news is we are still a part of the community, and you can still get your favorite Yogurt Beach flavor at our HWY 50/East Williams St. location – 1621 East William St. Thank you for your love and support for the past five years. We do know that you have choices, and we thank you for choosing Yogurt Beach and keeping it local.”

Yogurt Factory, 87 Rue de la Plage, 33780 Soulac-sur-Mer, France

Yogurt Factory Soulac Sur Mer closed on September 30 due to a disagreement. They are seeking a new location. The IG post said, “We will do our best to find another nice place but nothing is certain if nothing is suitable for our activity. We are looking and will keep you posted. We thank you for these 2 years spent by your side and we pray that the adventure doesn’t end like this.”

Yogurt Land, South Park San Fernando, Price Plaza Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago

Yogurt Land offers self-serve froyo. The permanent closure of the SouthPark branch was announced on September 1. The Trincity branch remains open.

Yogurtland, 1902 Lincoln Blvd C, Santa Monica, CA 90405

This was the second, newer Yogurtland location in Santa Monica. The shop opened in 2016. The Third Street Promenade location remains open.

Yogurtree, 1465 W Broad St., Quakertown, PA 18951

Yogurtree closed its doors on September 2. The owners posted the following closing announcement: “We’re sad to announce that after 7 years of serving the Quakertown community we have decided to not renew our Quakertown lease. Unfortunately, it’s a blessing in disguise as the pandemic has been destroying small businesses across the country. We hope that you continue to support small businesses including our Doylestown location, where all gift cards are accepted. As a thank you, we are offering free froyo on our last day to take home tomorrow from 12-2PM in Quakertown. Thanks again for your continued support in Doylestown!”
