January 2021 Froyo Shop Openings & Closings

January is typically a slow month for froyo shop openings, but not so much this year. Ecuador had the most froyo shop openings this month, with four. There were openings in Argentina, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, and the US. All the new shops were additional branches of existing froyo businesses, with the exception of Joygurt in Mexico. Sour Sally opened its first cloud kitchen in Indonesia, partnering with Selera Kapital.

The closings were in the US, Mexico, and Australia.

Nick the Greek opened a new branch in San Mateo, CA on January 22. Guests were treated to free lunch during the grand opening. The fast casual Greek eatery makes its own Greek frozen yogurt.

Closings

Berri Yummi Frozen Yogurt, 3100 Naamans Rd, Wilmington, DE 19810

Known for being Delaware’s first self-serve froyo shop, Berri Yummi closed its doors on January 18, after ten years. The owners posted the following message on FB: “After long and hard soul searching, we have made the difficult decision not to renew our lease at Berri Yummi.  Although we are very sad to announce this, we cannot help but marvel at what we have achieved together. 10 years ago, Caroline and I started with this idea in the middle of an economic meltdown, that Delaware needed a cool dessert joint for friends and families to gather and use their creative minds to make a perfect treat. Over this time, we have seen your families and friendships grow with us. Wonderful traditions and being part of the community are highlights we will not forget. We have employed over 100 kids, many experiencing their FIRST JOB, who have grown into wonderful adults with successful careers, lives, and even families of their own. We consider this a success that needs to be celebrated…We want to thank all of you for the greatest 10 years of our lives.  Truly something to be THANKFUL FOR!   YOU ARE THE BEST FRIENDS, FAMILY AND FANS!”

Berry Me announced its permanent closure on January 30. The shop opened in 2017 in Waterford Plaza.

Blitzer’s! Premium Frozen Yogurt, 25030 Hancock Ave Ste 103, Murrieta, CA 92562

This was Blitzer’s! second location. The shop opened in 2019. The original location in Menifee, CA remains open. The final day of business was January 10. The owners posted the following message on FB, “Tomorrow night, Sunday night at 8pm, we close the doors at our Murrieta location permanently. We fought as long as we could. Property ownership is unwilling to work with us. Our Menifee location will remain open and we’d love to continue seeing our guests. From our souls, we are deeply heartbroken and are so thankful for you all.”

Bonnie’s Toppings, 9410 2nd Ave, Stone Harbor, NJ 08247

Bonnie’s Toppings closed for the season on September 20, 2020 and announced on January 19 that it would not reopen. The owners posted the following on Instagram, “Wow! It’s been an awesome 9 seasons serving our customers!!! We’re sorry to announce that Bonnie’s Toppings will be closing permanently…Thank you to all of our customers and employees and wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2021!”

Chill’z Frozen Yogurt, 1719 Main St, Baker City, OR 97814

Chill’z Frozen Yogurt opened in 2018 in Baker City, Oregon. In addition to froyo, Chill’z offered drinks, air-fried foods, and homemade soups. The owner posted the following on Facebook, “Hi folks this is Theresa from Chill’z Frozen Yogurt. It is with a heavy heart that we must inform our customers we are closing our doors due to Covid! Anyone interested in free hard serve frozen yogurt we will be are open today from 2 to 4! please wait outside and we will take your order by curb side. Watch in the next two weeks we will be having an indoor sale and people can come in two at a time and look at the inventory that will be sold. This is food, toppings, containers, kitchen items, and tables with chairs, and more! We hope to see you in the future possibly in a new location or chill’z on wheels!”

Cocomero Frozen Yogurt, 106 Barnett Ave B, Forsyth, IL 62535

Cocomero at the Hickory Point Mall in Forsyth, IL, closed on January 14. It started as a frozen yogurt shop and later added Korean food. The closure was announced on FB on December 27. The owner posted: “7 years ago on February 14th, we opened our doors and began to serve bubble tea and frozen yogurt to the community. Then we wanted introduce healthy Korean cuisine and started serving food as well. We felt proud seeing our customers enjoy our food and service. Our building contract will be over by this year. It is with great sadness that we must inform you we will be closing our doors at our current location on January 14th. We hope to reopen at a new location, but we are unsure when or where that will be. All gift cards should be used prior to the closing of our current location on January 14th. We have greatly appreciated all of your patronage and the memories we have made together.”

Scrumptious LLC, 1715 Delaware Ave, Wilmington, DE 19806

Scrumptious was a tiny café in Trolley Square that served brunch, sandwiches, beverages, and self-serve frozen yogurt. The owner posted the following on FB, “It is with mixed emotions that we inform you that scrumptious will be closing for good on 1/5. This pandemic has been challenging on so many levels but we are extremely heartened by the support of the community and the rallying around small businesses. The decision to close was not driven purely from a financial perspective but more choosing a new balance between time and money. Our objective is to focus on each other. It has been our pleasure serving, bonding and being a part of your families/palettes for even a short period of time over the last 8 years. We wish you all nothing but good health and happiness. Thank you for the support over the years!”

sweetFrog, 140 Crossroads Dr, Plover, WI 54467

SweetFrog (Plover, Wisconsin) announced on Facebook that January 5 would be the final day of business. “Brandon Lester, district manager of SFE Brands LLC, which owns sweetFrog, confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the Plover location will close permanently because of “lack of community support.” Lester said the reason was not only because of COVID-19, but also from less activity at the frozen yogurt shop during winter months.” SweetFrog opened in 2012 in Plover.

Yogen Fruz, Albrisa Plaza, Merida, Yucatan, Mexico

Yogen Fruz closed the branch in Albrisa Plaza on January 2 but still has a branch in Merida, Mexico at the Mayab Lighthouse Hospital.
