Froyo in Colombia: History, Trends, Shops

We’ve noticed quite a few froyo shops opening in Colombia lately and we wanted to learn more about the Colombian froyo scene. Colombia’s economy is the fourth largest in Latin America and there are 50.34 million inhabitants. The four largest cities are Bogota (7.64 million), Cali (2.39 million), Medellin (2 million), and Barranquilla (1.38 million) and 75% of the population lives in an urban area.

We were surprised to find so many shops in Colombia. The oldest froyo shops were founded in 2010: Woody’s, Percimon, Yogen Fruz, IOMI, and The Yogurt Factory. Woody’s opened the first self-serve froyo shop in Colombia in Chia. By 2013, Woody’s had 22 froyo shops.

Most of the froyo shops in Colombia are local and counter-serve. Quite a few also offer paletas. Many are quite stylish. A few multinational chains have entered the Colombian market: Freshii, Snog, llaollao, Yogen Fruz, and Yogurberry. The Llaollao location in Bogota has closed.

Goyurt is currently the largest froyo chain in the country with 60 locations listed on their website. Founded in 2013, the counter-serve froyo chain’s menu includes froyo, parfaits, brownies, and paletas.
