May was a very strong month for frozen yogurt. We tracked 89 froyo businesses, mostly brand new, in 30 countries compared to 68 new froyo businesses in 25 countries in April. With the increase in existing businesses adding froyo to the menu, we added a new category to capture this type of activity.
The United States continued to have the most openings, with 22 in May (vs. 16 in April), followed by Mexico with eleven, and Australia with eight. The United States has the most existing businesses adding froyo. Every new froyo shop that opened in April in Australia was self-serve. Australian froyo inspired the opening of Sydney Yogurt Club, a new self-serve froyo shop in South Korea.
Notable openings include MYKA’s first shop in Panama and Yogurt Purple with three new outlets in South Korea. Llaollao did not open any new branches in May, which is unusual given its long history of opening at least one new outlet a month.
Sadly, we also found seven froyo shops that closed. Two of the seven moved to a new location.
