Froyo vs. Froyo Alternatives
Of the new flavors, 48% were froyo and 52% froyo alternatives. Of the froyo alternatives, vegan soft serve made with milk alternatives (e.g., cashew milk, almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk) was the most popular, accounting for 31% of the new flavors. Interestingly, 16 Handles and Red Mango’s new flavors were all dairy-free. There were some notable firsts:
- Summit Premium introduced the first oat milk soft serve this year.
- Menchie’s introduced its first gelato flavor and first dairy-free flavor made with cashew milk.
- 16 Handles introduced its first cashew milk based soft serve flavors
Branded Partnerships
Brand partnerships continued to be popular, with Nabisco (OREO) leading the way. Other branded ingredients Kellogg’s, Nabisco (Oreo), Hershey, Mrs. Smith’s Apple Pie, Sour Patch Kids, Chips Ahoy, Nestle, M&M’s, Ghirardelli, Blue Diamond, Hi-Chew, Knott’s Berry Farm, etc.
Specific Flavors
In terms of specific flavors, we didn’t see a big change. Baked goods/dessert inspired flavors were the most popular, accounting for 28.4% of new flavors, mainly driven by cookie flavors. Fruit flavors accounted for 25% of new flavors, candy flavors (16%), drink flavors (11%), cereal (1%) and other (17%). Cereal flavors and fruit flavors declined.
Red Mango had some interesting Fro-No (dairy-free) flavors, including Beet It and Cool as a Cucumber. Yogurtland also introduced innovative flavors like Ube, Blueberry Lavender, and Strawberry Balsamic. Frose sorbet by 16 Handles captured the popular frose trend.
The year was also marked by the rising popularity of CBD products. Bella’s Frozen Yogurt in St. Louis, MO and Yogland, London both introduced CBD-infused frozen yogurt.
