National Frozen Yogurt Month 2020, Froyo Trends

Since it’s National Frozen Yogurt Month, we decided to take a look at the popularity of frozen yogurt according to Google Trends. Google Trends captures how often people search for a particular term using Google Search, the #1 search engine in the world, over a period of time.

Worldwide interest in frozen yogurt over the last five years peaked in late June 2017. The pattern of interest is clearly seasonal, with local peaks every June and July and declines during the winter months. Since 2017, interest has been declining gradually every year, until this March and April, when many froyo shops were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Fortunately, interest has picked up since then as the weather has warmed and froyo shops have reopened.

Interest in frozen yogurt in the United States shows a similar pattern, peaking a week later in July 2017, and steadily declining, with seasonal fluctuations since then. The pandemic also had a strong impact on interest in frozen yogurt in March and April of this year. Interest has not recovered to pre-pandemic levels but it is rising.

Taking a closer look at interest in frozen yogurt in the US for the past 12 months, interest, which is measured as a proportion of all queries in the state, was highest in the following states:

  1. Idaho
  2. Arizona
  3. Oregon
  4. Utah
  5. Colorado

This represents a move away from a large, urban cities along the East and West Coast and a surge of interest in the Mountain states, with Oregon being the exception.

And what are people searching for? The top frozen yogurt queries in the US for the past 12 months were:

  1. Yogurt near me
  2. Frozen yogurt near me
  3. Frozen yogurt near

The most popular queries show that people are looking for frozen yogurt near them when they use Google Search.

Looking at the past 12 months at worldwide searches for frozen yogurt, the following countries showed the most interest in frozen yogurt:

  1. United States
  2. Canada
  3. Australia
  4. Singapore
  5. Greece

Keep in mind that regional interest represents a proportion of all queries, not the absolute query count. Interest remains the highest in the US. Going back five years, the top 3 countries in terms of interest in frozen yogurt remained the same: #1 United States, #2 Canada, #3 Australia. Since people use Google to search for frozen yogurt near them, it makes sense that people search for frozen yogurt more often in countries with more frozen yogurt shops.

It looks like interest in frozen yogurt will recover, but whether froyo shops can weather loss of business due to the coronavirus and now civil unrest, is still up in the air for many shops. Also, it’s worth noting that interest in frozen yogurt has been stable though declining slightly over time.
