Is Black the New White in 2016?

Lykone Black - Black Sakura

Happy 2016! Last week we looked at the frozen yogurt industry in 2015, the froyo year that was. This week we’re taking a look at new, emerging types of frozen yogurt and soft serve.

Frozen yogurt with activated charcoal. In 2015, Sour Sally Indonesia rebranded and introduced an innovative new line of frozen yogurt and toppings. One of the new froyo flavors, Black Sakura, was the world’s first black frozen yogurt. Black Sakura contains naturally activated charcoal which is high in antioxidants and also flushes out toxins out of the body (according to Sour Sally). We first wrote about the new Sour Sally in May 2015.

BLK 513 introduced black frozen yogurt to Manila (Philippines) when it opened on December 2, 2015.

Activated charcoal in products have been gaining http://cocowhip.com.au/about/popularity, appearing in juices, macarons, and pastries. Is it really good for you? Experts mostly agree that while activated charcoal has long been used to treat poisoning because it absorbs substances, charcoal will absorb anything in your digestive tract, good or bad. Therefore, the benefits of consuming charcoal are limited. The dark black froyo still looks striking and it doesn’t taste like charcoal. Consume in moderation.

Dairy-free soft serve made with coconut milk. Pinkberry just introduced Pinkberry Coconut Milk in Salted Caramel, Coconut and Dark Chocolate and Menchie’s just introduced their first coconut milk flavor, Tahitian Vanilla. The new soft serves from Pinkberry do not contain live and active cultures although other coconut milk soft serves like Australia’s CocoWhip and Cloud Top Yogurt’s are cultured and dairy-free.
