Froyo Trends: Edible Spoons

Recognizing the growing amount of plastic waste, the European Union ban on single-use plastics went into effect on July 3, 2021. The ban includes single-use plastic cutlery like plastic froyo spoons. Interestingly, we’ve recently seen froyo shops like YOMARO (Germany), Sweet Savannah’s (Louisville, KY), Deliyoguen (Colombia), and Oh My Yog! (Mexico) offer edible spoons, an eco-friendly zero waste plastic spoon alternative.

Bakeys, founded in India by groundwater researcher Narayana Peesapaty in 2011, was the first line of edible cutlery. Made with millet, rice and wheat flours that are baked until hard and dry, the utensils worked for hot and cold foods and came in several sweet and savory flavors and shapes. The spoons are made mostly with millet, which requires much less water than rice to grow. The company’s founder was arrested for fraud in 2019 and the company is no longer in business but others were inspired to create edible cutlery.

There are now multiple companies making edible spoons including the following:

  • Bocado Products is a manufacturer of edible spoons based in Puerto Rico. The spoons are made with wheat flour, olive oil and salt. They’re baked, low calorie, non-GMO, vegan, and all-natural. The spoons can be purchased on Amazon. IG @ ediblespoon_bocado
  • Edible Bites is a wholesale supplier of edible tableware based in Jaipur, India. The edible spoons are made with salt, sugar, corn powder, sago flour, wheat flour, maida, semolina, rice flour, and water.   • Edibles by Jack, based in Chelsea, Massachussetts, makes edible spoons in 20 flavors and in two sizes, mini and standard. The spoons are made with local, natural, sustainably sourced ingredients. IG @ediblesbyjack
  • Crunchis is a Colombian company that seeks to reduce plastic waste by making edible cutlery. Their spoons come in one flavor and are made with biscuits. They’re offered at several locations of Deliyoguen, a Colombian froyo chain. IG @crunchisoficial
  • UK-based Founcy makes Edible Spoons, a line of makes organic, all-natural biodegradable spoons made out of wheat and salt. The spoons are available in three flavors: salty, chocolate, and spicy. IG @edible.spoon
  • Based in California, incrEDIBLE eats is a member of IMPACT COLLECTIVE, “a group of forward-thinking brands committed to taking immediate and positive action to neutralize our plastic footprint.” They also contribute to sustainability non-profits and they’re carbon-neutral. The non-dairy, non-GMO edible spoons come in four flavors: vanilla, chocolate, oregano chili, and black pepper. They’re made with wheat, oat, corn, chickpea, and brown rice. IG @ecoincredible
  • Spoontainable, a German company, makes edible, gluten-free, vegan spoons that are climate neutral. Spoonies are made from shells, a byproduct of the cereal and cocoa processing industries. The ice cream spoons are available in two flavors, original and chocolate, and sold in Germany. IG @spoontainable
  • TwentyFifty, based in San Diego, California, has a patented process for creating edible cutlery. The biodegradable, compostable spoons are made with corn, soy, and wheat. Their goal is to end the use of single use plastics by 2050. IG @twentyfiftyfork
