Froyo in Uruguay: History, Trends, & Shops

Uruguay, with a population of 3.4 million, is the second smallest country in South America. The largest city by far is Montevideo, with a population of 1.3 million. The second largest, Salto, has a population of 104,011. While Punta Del Este is tiny with 7,234 residents, it is a famous beach resort town that attracts many wealthy tourists during the summer. The GDP per capita of Uruguay is second only to Chile in South America. It’s considered a high-income economy but not a froyo hot spot.

According to a blog post about froyo in Uruguay, Yogo was the first to open a froyo shop in Uruguay in 2011, followed by Yogen Fruz. Interestingly, Red Mango opted to introduce self-serve froyo to Uruguay in 2012. More froyo shops, all counter-serve, opened from 2013-2017. Froyo shops in Uruguay have stayed in business for about 2 years before closing.

Based on our research, we found three remaining froyo shops: two Donna Frozen Yogurt shops in Salto and El Tropico in Montevideo. You can also find froyo in the freezer section of supermarkets.
