Froyo in Chile: History, Trends & Shops

YogurtLife

The southernmost country in the world, Chile has a population of 19 million. The capital, Santiago, is the largest city in the country, with a population of 4.8 million. The next largest cities are Puente Alto (0.51 million), Anfofagsta (0.31 million), and Vina del Mar (0.29 million). While Chile has the 4th largest GDP in South America, it ranks #1 on GDP per capita.

Froyo has had a longer history in Chile than in most South American countries, thanks to Fruzco Chile SA, the master franchisee for Yogen Fruz, which started building the Yogen Früz brand in Chile back in 1987. Yogen Fruz still has the most froyo locations of all froyo chains in Chile. Yogurtlife brought self-serve froyo to Chile in 2010. Pinkberry had a shop in Santiago that closed in 2019. Freshii, the Canadian fast casual healthy restaurant franchise that offers froyo, announced intentions to open locations in Chile back in 2015 but we are not sure if any locations have opened.

Although froyo has a long history in Chile, we found few home-grown froyo shops, fewer than in other South American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador.
