Froyo in Brazil: History, Trends, and Shops

As the largest economy in Latin America, Brazil was naturally a place where frozen yogurt shops opened early. Brazilians are known for their love of acai and health-consciousness; froyo seemed like it would be a natural fit for the population. The largest cities are Sao Paulo (12.33 million), Rio de Janiero (6.75 million), Brasilia (3.06 million) and Salvador (2.89 million).

Froyo History and Trends

Yogoberry is the largest Brazilian froyo chain in Brazil. The first shop opened in Rio de Janiero in 2007. Inspired by the froyo trend in California, the founders adapted the froyo concept to appeal to health-conscious Brazilians. Yogoberry, like many froyo shops in Brazil, also offers acai. It’s not uncommon in Brazil to see the two combined (layers of froyo and frozen acai).

While self-serve froyo is less common, it can be found in Brazil. With 19 locations, Yoggi is the largest self-serve froyo chain in Brazil.

Most of the froyo shops are local, counter-serve, and positioned as healthy. Two large multinational froyo chains entered the market, Tutti Frutti and Yogen Fruz. Multiple shops offer froyo with no fat and no sugar. Most shops offer more than just froyo. The most popular froyo shop names in Brazil use either contain Yogo and Berry.

Sadly, we found that most of the froyo shops have permanently closed and they closed well before the coronavirus pandemic. Consider the case of Yogoberry, which had over 100 locations (mostly in Brazil) in 2012 and now has 24 locations left. However, if you’re in a larger city in Brazil, you should still be able to find froyo.
