Froyo in Belgium: History, Trends, & Shops

Moochie Antwerp

The first froyo shop opened in Belgium in 2011. In 2024, we found 26 shops that serve soft serve froyo. Most froyo shops in Belgium are counter-serve. The only exception is Planet Yoghurt, which recently switched to flat-rate pricing, while continuing to offer self-serve froyo.

Belgium is one of the smallest countries in Western Europe with a population of nearly 12 million and three official languages: Dutch, French, and German. Over 98% of the population lives in urban areas and the median age is 41.9 years. The largest cities are the capital, Brussels (1.02 million), followed by Antwerp (459,805), Gent (231,493), Charleroi (200,132), and Liege (182,597).

History of Froyo & Current State of Froyo

New froyo shops are still opening, with several opening in 2023. Not surprisingly, you can get Liege waffles with your froyo at multiple shops and several boba shops also offer boba.

Counter-serve Moochie was the first Belgian froyo chain, founded in 2012 in Ghent but the first froyo shop was a shop called FreezyYog which opened in 2011 in Brussels. Today, Moochie has six counter-serve shops and a froyo truck. Planet Yoghurt, founded in 2012 was the first self-serve froyo shop in Belgium. It added another concept, Planet Pasta, and currently has five branches.

Belgium’s ties to France and the Netherlands account for the presence of France’s Yogurt Factory (3 branches) and YB from the Netherlands. Other international frozen yogurt chains once had shops in Belgium, including Chillbox from Greece, Llaollao from Spain, Yogorino from Italy, and YoYogurt from Italy.
