Froyo at the Mall of America

With summer around the corner, our thoughts turn to shopping and froyo. The Mall of America, which opened in 1992 in Bloomington, Minnesota, is the largest shopping mall in the United States. The mall is home to over 500 stores, eateries and its own amusement park with roller coasters. Over 40 million people visit the mall each year.

Does the country’s largest mall have frozen yogurt? Of course it does.

Current Eateries That Offer Frozen Yogurt

  • Cold Stone Creamery (382 South Ave.): While Cold Stone is known for ice cream, they do carry frozen yogurt and sorbet.
  • Freshens Yogurt (336 South Ave.): There are two Freshens at Mall of America. One location specializes in crepes and smoothies and the other in yogurt. This is the only eatery that’s still open with frozen yogurt as the main offering.
  • Freshii (319 South Ave.): Freshii serves fresh, healthy food for people on the go. For dessert, they have froyo.
  • Haagen Dazs (60 E Broadway): While it is an ice cream shop, Haagen Dazs has froyo and sorbet as well.

Former Occupants That Offered Frozen Yogurt

  • Yogen Fruz: The world’s largest frozen yogurt chain opened at Mall of America in 2011. It’s unclear when it closed.
  • Freeziac: The locally owned and operated self-serve chain that opened in Mall of America in 2011. It seems to have closed in 2015.
  • Pinkberry: Pinkberry opened inside Macy’s in 2012 and closed in 2014. It was their first and only location in Minnesota.

Looking at the next four largest malls in America, we found that only one has a true frozen yogurt shop. You can get frozen yogurt at all four malls but you have to go to an ice cream shop or some other eatery to find it.

  • King of Prussia: No dedicated frozen yogurt shop
  • South Coast Plaza: No dedicated frozen yogurt shop
  • Millcreek Mall: No dedicated frozen yogurt shop
  • Aventura Mall: Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt

Yes, these are sad times for shoppers who enjoy eating frozen yogurt at the mall. It used to be much easier to find frozen yogurt shops at shopping malls. Many malls are struggling or even dying because big retailers like Sears, JC Penney’s, Toys R Us, and Macy’s have been closing stores with the shift to online shopping. On the positive side, lovely malls like the Stanford Shopping Center, Glendale Galleria/The Americana at Brand, Newport Fashion Island, Westfield Century City, Westfield Topanga, Santana Row and others still have froyo shops.
