Creative Froyo Flavors, 2021 Edition

Marcel’s Peppermint Tart froyo

We’re continuing our tradition of recognizing creativity with our 2021 list of creative froyo flavors. The flavors we feature were all introduced in 2020, except for Rosemary Blackcurrant, which Culture Yogurt introduced this year. It’s good to see that there were still many new creative flavors introduced during a challenging year.

Beet frozen yogurt makes it on our list for the second consecutive year. Taro Frozen Yogurt of Bahrain (@taro_bh) might not be the first froyo shop to create beet frozen yogurt but it is probably the first to do so in Bahrain. Are we right?

Bunuelo frozen yogurt from Yogocup in Mexico (@yogocupmx) was introduced in December 2020. Yogocup’s version is lactose-free. Bunuelos are fried discs of flattened dough dusted in cinnamon sugar. They’re often served at Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. They were introduced by Spanish settlers.

Coconut Cream Caramel vegan soft serve from Eb & Bean, @ebandbean, is made with handcrafted coconut milk caramel sauce from fellow Portland, Oregon company, Bloom Caramel. Bloom Caramel’s sauces are dairy-free and corn-syrup free.

Jamaica Fro-No by Red Mango El Salvador (@redmangosv) is inspired by a popular Mexican drink, Jamaica iced tea (agua de Jamaica). Jamaica is a tea made with dried hibiscus flowers, water, and sugar. Hibiscus flowers have a tart tasted similar to cranberries. Red Mango’s version is dairy-free and sugar-free.

Matcha Green Tea Kit Kat froyo from Nuccelli’s in Amherstburg, ON, Canada was created this year for St. Patrick’s Day. Today is the last day to try this creative new flavor. Nuccelli’s (@nuccellis) opened in 1987 and they’re still coming up with creative flavors. Matcha Green Tea Kit Kat is features thin, crisp cookie wafers enrobed in smooth white chocolate infused with sweet matcha green tea flavor.

Ovaltine frozen yogurt from Yo Mama Hong Kong was introduced last year and is based on a popular milk flavoring product. Originally from Switzerland, Ovaltine is milk flavoring product with malt extract, sugar, cocoa, and whey. In Hong Kong, it’s not unusual to find Ovaltine served in a café. It’s likely that the British introduced Ovaltine to Hong Kong in the early 1900s. As Hong Kong’s first frozen yogurt shop, Yo Mama Frozen Yogurt (@yomamafroyohk) strives to serve the world’s best frozen yogurt.

Peppermint Tart froyo from Marcel’s Frozen Yogurt in South Africa (@marcelsza) was launched last year for South Africa’s Heritage Month (September). Peppermint crisp tart is a South African no-bake dessert tart made with whipped cream, caramelized condensed milk, coconut biscuits and grated peppermint chocolate (a chocolate candy bar invented by Rowntree in South Africa and now made by Nestle). We’ve never had a peppermint crisp tart but it sounds amazing.

Pisco sour froyo from Moggui Frozen Yogurt in Peru (@mogguifrozenyogurt) is inspired by the national cocktail of Peru and Chile. In the Peruvian version, the drink is made with pisco brandy, lime, simple syrup, egg white, and a dash of bitters. The egg whites are shaken till foamy.

Rosemary blackcurrant froyo from Culture An American Yogurt Company in Brooklyn and NYC (@cultureny) is made with housemade yogurt. They make the yogurt from scratch, starting with milk and cultures. We love rosemary and blackcurrants. Combining them sounds like a match made in heaven. Did you know that rosemary is a good source of iron, calcium, and vitamin B-6? Blackcurrants have a high concentration of antioxidants, vitamin C, anthocyanins, polyphenolic substances and gamma-linolenic acid.

Sorrel sorbet from Tutti Frutti Jamaica (@tuttifruttija) is a flavor we’ve never seen before. Sorrel is an herb often used in salads. The raw leaves are tart and tangy in flavor. Sorrel sorbet is a well-known Jamaican treat served during Christmas.

Thai Lemonade froyo from Peachwave Cayman Islands (@peachwavefrozenyogurtcayman) seems to be made with basil and lemongrass? We’ve seen different recipes for Thai lemonade, some with basil, others with mint, ginger, and cilantro. Some even have a spicy kick.

All of these creative froyo flavors sound delicious!
