Choosing the Right Custom Cups for Your Frozen Yogurt Business

What type of custom cup designs work best? We asked IFYA’s Packaging and Branding Expert, Tim Porter, to give our readers the inside scoop on designing custom frozen yogurt cups. Choosing the Right Custom Cups for Your Frozen Yogurt Business

By Tim Porter

When you are looking for ways to get the word out and grow your frozen yogurt business, sometimes the best ideas are the simplest. If you could grow business awareness with minimal expense and no added workload, would you do it? Every customer who buys your frozen yogurt walks away with a cup that you are already paying for. Why not make that cup work for you?

Benefits of Custom Cup Design

I’m sure you’ve noticed that every major company puts their name on each bag, cup and wrapper leaving their establishments. They do it for a reason. Each of those items is advertising. Those logos and slogans really do stick in customers’ heads. A custom logo on every single cup of frozen yogurt that you sell is the cheapest advertisement you can buy.

Creating Your Own Design

Once you decide to try custom cups, your next step is to come up with a design. This is where you can make the most impact. Most froyo stores initially think of a very simple design with their logo on one side of the cup with a white background. One piece of advice I would offer is to go bold, be creative, and put some thought into the design of your custom cup. If your store already has a logo, use it. If you do not have a logo, there are many online companies that can create one for you. Use the space on your cups wisely, make your logo as big as possible while still looking great.

Print on One Side or Two?

Dead space in advertising gains you nothing. Printing on just one side of your cup means you are taking advantage of only half of the potential of your most widely distributed ad campaign. Use both sides.

Some people struggle with whether they should print the same thing on each side of the cup or if two messages are better than one. Keep in mind that repetition is a good thing when you are driving your message home. Use both sides of the cup to print your logo or add a slogan to one side.

Choosing the Color of Your Cup

Business owners often choose a basic white cup, but color is much more eye-catching. The most common cup colors purchased by frozen yogurt store owners are green and pink. If these colors work for your business, there is no need to overthink it. Use the colors of your logo, store and brand. If your colors are purple and brown, use them. Make sure, though, that your logo will show up against whichever background color that you choose.

Leverage Social Media

Don’t underestimate the importance of having your social media sites printed on your cups. Keeping your name in front of customers through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Google+ allows you to interact with your customers when they are not in your store.  Most of your customers are on social media, connecting with them online allows you to keep your brand fresh on their minds.

Also, let me leave you with one last tip, something the most successful restaurants like Starbucks and McDonald’s are now doing: add QR codes to your custom cups. QR codes can help your customers stay connected with you by offering discounts, drawings or other rewards and create powerful loyalty.

About Tim Porter

Tim is an entrepreneur who opened a frozen dessert store in Arizona in 2007. He quickly realized that there were very few reputable companies offering cups and spoons. The companies he found were inconsistent, lacked customer service and did not offer the ability to order online. He set out to change the industry and started www.FrozenDessertSupplies.com to fill the huge gap he found when looking for frozen dessert cups, spoons lids etc. Having started and owned his own frozen dessert store has given him the unique opportunity to know exactly what customers are dealing with and what decisions they need to make to be successful.
