A Look at Home Grown International Froyo Chains: Australia, Germany, Norway, UK

Funky Frozen Yogurt in Norway

In Part 2 of our series on international frozen yogurt chains to watch, we cover four more countries: Australia, Norway, UK, and Germany.

Australia

Wow Cow was Australia’s first frozen yogurt chain. It was founded by US entrepreneur Carl Harwin in 2007. The first location was in Sydney. Several locations opened but none remain.

A recent online search revealed that Yogurtland currently has the most locations of all the froyo chains in Australia. As for local Australian frozen yogurt companies, Yo-get-it is the leader, with 9 locations in Australia and 3 in China. Yo-get-it has a self-serve, priced by weight model. They just added a froyo truck that roams around Queensland.

Germany

Germany seems to have an abundance of stylishly cute froyo shops like I Love Leo, Wonderpots, YOMARO, and Devido. The largest is YOMARO, founded in 2012, which currently has 14 locations with three more opening this spring. YOMARO is “inspired by the Asian Frozen Yogurt culture.” They care about the experience and want to spread fun and joy. Their concept is full service and offers one flavor with “unlimited toppings.”

Norway

Self-serve frozen yogurt made its way to Norway in 2009, with the founding of the first self-serve frozen yogurt concept in Scandinavia, Yogurt Heaven. However, Yogurt Heaven has been overtaken by Funky Frozen Yogurt, a self-serve froyo concept founded in 2013 in Norway. Funky Frozen Yogurt serves organic frozen yogurt and currently has 18 locations listed on its website. The first Funky Frozen Yogurt location opened in 2013.

UK

Snog Frozen Yogurt was the first UK brand that we remember hearing about. The first Snog location opened in South Kensington in 2007. Their branding and store design has always been cheeky, like their name. And that big pink Snog double-decker bus is eye-catching and made for Instagram. Co-founders Robert Baines and Pablo Urbie wanted to develop the healthiest, tastiest frozen yogurt in the market – thus Snog was born. Unilever, the world’s largest ice cream manufacturer and distributor has a stake in the company. The Snog Healthy Treats Cookbook was published in 2011.
