It’s that time for the tale of the tape, our annual froyo chain location count. We’ll reveal the largest froyo chains in the world, how many locations they currently have, and how much they shrank or grew compared to this time last year.
The top 10 largest frozen yogurt chains in the world accounted for approximately 1,956 locations, up 53 locations from December 2022. This is the first time since we started tracking the largest froyo chains that the number of locations for the 10 largest froyo chains increased. The increase was modest. The top 10 accounted for 1,902 locations in December 2022 and 2,351 locations in December 2021. In 2013, the top 10 froyo chains had 4,482 locations.
Menchie’s is still the largest froyo chain in the world, with the majority of shops in the United States. Llaollao went from #6 in 2022 to #2 in 2023.
Llaollao, Pinkberry, Yogorino, Greenfrost, and Sour Sally all grew in 2023. Sour Sally joined the top 10 list for the first time. Orange Leaf, #10 on the 2022 list, had 67 locations in December 2023, down 10 from December 2022.
Greenfrost is the only chain on our list that’s based in South America and Sour Sally is the only chain on the list that was founded in Asia.
Froyo chains to watch include Goyurt in Colombia with 76 locations, Yole, a Spanish brand based in Singapore, with 65, and Myfroyoland in India with 51. Yole plans to open its first location in North America in 2023, in Toronto, Canada.
The List of Largest Froyo Chains by Location Count
1. Menchie’s: 326 locations (-33 locations vs. December 2022)
Menchie’s currently has 326 locations, making it the largest froyo chain in the world, again. Of these, 291 are located in the United States, 27 in Canada, and 8 outside of North America. In the US, the most locations are in California, with 72, followed by Texas with 40, and Florida with 38. The locations were all listed on the Menchie’s website. In 2022, Menchie’s location count declined by 20 stores.
2. Llaollao: 273 locations (+56 locations vs. December 2022)
Llaollao remains the largest froyo chain in Europe and Asia and one of the only froyo chains that has managed to grow. They have 102 locations in Spain, 76 in Malaysia, and 34 in the Philippines. The locations are listed on their website. They open a few locations every month. In fact, they opened one in Malaysia on the day we published this post, but we didn’t update our chart.
3. Pinkberry: 253 locations (+4 locations vs. December 2022)
While Pinkberry’s press releases do not mention the number of their locations, we were able to find the locations with a bit of effort. The Pinkberry World website has links to the websites of each country where Pinkberry has stores. We found 253 locations, including 95 in Canada (most of these are co-branded with Second Cup), 55 in the United States, and 64 in the Middle East. Pinkberry opened in a new market this year, Cameroon.
4. SweetFrog: 250 locations (no change from December 2022)
We weren’t able to easily access a list of SweetFrog locations. According to an October 2023 press release from SweetFrog says that they have 250 locations “in over 25 states and the Dominican Republic.” However, SweetFrog press releases in 2021 and 2022 also said that they have 250 locations. We suspect that there are fewer than 250 locations currently.
5. Yogurtland: 220 locations (-10 locations vs. December 2022)
While we were not able to access a list of Yogurtland’s locations from the Yogurtland website, a Yogurtland press release from October 2023 states that they have 220 locations. Most of the locations are in the US.
6. Yogen Fruz: 151 locations (-149 locations vs. December 2022)
While it was easy to find the list of Yogen Fruz locations in the US and Canada on the Yogen Fruz website, we could not determine how many locations are still open outside of North America. We counted 124 locations in Canada and 27 in the US, for a total of 151 locations, two less than in North America in 2022. Some of the Canadian locations are co-branded with restaurants like Feta & Olives and Pita Pit. Many are mall-based. The Yogen Fruz website claims that there are over 1,300 locations in over forty countries, but that claim has not changed for years. We know there are over 151 locations.
7. Yogorino: 139 locations (+1 vs. December 2022)
Yogorino’s website says that the list of stores undergoes constant updating. According to the Yogorino website, there are currently 138 locations, the same as in December 2022. Of these locations, 76 are in Italy and 42 are in Asia. Yogorino is based in Italy.
8. TCBY : 138 locations (-2 locations vs. December 2022)
The TCBY website lists locations in US; Illinois has the most locations, with 24. We know that there are some international locations but are unable to determine how many exist.
9. Greenfrost: 103 locations (+23 locations vs. December 2022)
Greenfrost made the top 10 list of largest froyo chains last year, at number nine. This year, they grew by 23 locations, but remain #9 on the list. All of their shops are in Ecuador.
10. Sour Sally: 94 locations (+24 locations vs. December 2022)
Sour Sally joins the top 10 list for the first time, with 94 locations, all in Indonesia. The 94th location opened on December 7.
Our Methodology
Our store location counts are based on the list of locations on the chain’s website as of mid-December 2023. We also considered whether the information seemed current. If we could not determine the store location counts from the chain’s website or the website appeared outdated, we looked at recent press releases. However, we placed less confidence in location counts that were not obtained from the chain’s website with a list of current locations.
