Warm & Cold Froyo Combinations (Toppings & Bottoms)

Normally when you go to a froyo shop and look for warm toppings, the most you’ll find is warm sauces like hot fudge or hot caramel. Most shops don’t offer warm sauces because they require sauce warming dispensers. However, some froyo shops offer warm toppings, warm bottoms or warm cones, allowing customers to enjoy a delicious warm & cold froyo combination.

Warm Toppings

Warm toppings usually take the form of warm sauces or compotes. At Caffe Ambrosia in San Francisco, CA, locals love to top their frozen yogurt with a big, warm brownie.

Warm Bottoms: Waffles and Pancakes

Waffles are the most commonly seen warm bottoms for froyo. The waffles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and forms, including Belgian, Paleo, Liege, regular waffles, etc. A shop called Yo Waffle in Gilbert, AZ (@yo_waf) brings froyo and waffles together.

Le Waf supplies ready made Liege waffles or waffle dough (frozen or dry mix) to froyo shops so you can make waffles fresh. The waffles are based on a traditional old word recipe. They can be topped with froyo or cut into sticks for dipping into froyo.

At Kumoya (@kumoya_singapore), a Japanese-French dessert cafe in Singapore, you can get Sweet Pancakes in 3 flavors (Matcha, Chocolate Banana, Tiramisu) topped with froyo. Other froyo shops serve pancakes but the froyo is generally served on the side to prevent the pancakes from getting soggy.

Warm Bottoms: Baked Goods

Warm baked goods are a popular base for frozen yogurt. Muffins topped with froyo might be a Michigan thing. Popular eatery, Afternoon Delight, in Ann Arbor, MI offers homemade bran muffins topped with froyo. Ask for the Muffin Delight.

SweetDuet, a BAB Systems franchise concept, offers self-serve frozen yogurt and gourmet muffins. Customers can ask to have a muffin topped with froyo. There are currently four locations in Michigan.

Di’lishi (@dilishi) now has warm muffin bowls that can be topped with froyo. Muffin bowl flavors include blueberry, lemon poppyseed and pumpkin walnut. They’ve also added Belgian waffles. Di’lishi has locations in NC, TN and GA, with new locations coming soon to VA and FL.

At Le Blueboy in Montreal, you can get a churro bowl for your froyo or churros on the side.

32 Degrees, a chain of frozen yogurt shops in the Southeast US, developed Bottomz, baked desserts that are served warm and available to be topped with frozen yogurt. Bottomz are available in three varieties: chocolate lava cake, fudge filled chocolate chip cookie and apple pie.

Pinkberry in the Middle East offered a warm baked brownie and apple pie, topped with frozen yogurt, for a limited time.

At Cafe Podima in Boston, MA, you can order a brownie sundae with warm brownie slices, frozen yogurt, whipped cream, chocolate chips, walnuts and hot fudge.

Oregon Frozen Yogurt (Oregon, WI, @oregonfroyo) serves warm, fresh baked chocolate chip cookies every Friday from 3 PM – 9 PM. Guests are encouraged to make cookie sundaes by adding froyo and toppings.

Warm Bottoms: Other

Warm bottoms aren’t limited to baked goods, waffles and pancakes though.

Our favorite warm bottom is featured in Fraiche Yogurt’s SF Chronicle special. The SF Chronicle special is a bowl of warm, steel cut oatmeal topped with fresh organic Greek yogurt and choice of toppings. We always ask to substitute the fresh yogurt with housemade Greek frozen yogurt and add extra housemade mochi. The yogurt that melts onto the oatmeal makes the oatmeal taste even better. Find Fraiche in Palo Alto, CA and at San Francisco International Airport.

Vanilla Jill’s in Eugene, Oregon, makes their own organic froyo and they have plenty of vegan options. Their flavors and toppings are not typical. The emphasis is on health and local ingredients. The warm steamed sweet brown rice, topped with froyo of course, is reminiscent of mochi only fresher, nuttier, and not as sweet.
