Tamarindo sticks at Yogurtland
Do you love creative, unusual frozen yogurt toppings? We created this list to recognize froyo shops that offer interesting toppings, challenge other shops to offer interesting toppings, and be a resource for frozen yogurt fans who want to learn about innovative frozen yogurt shop offerings. P.S. If you’re looking for creative froyo flavors, see our earlier post.
We’ve also noticed a positive correlation between the presence of creative froyo flavors and creative froyo toppings. Let’s hear it for the creative froyo shop owners out there.
24K Gold Leaf – Indonesia
Sour Sally Indonesia (@soursallycoid) created the world’s most expensive yogurt gelato made with collagen and topped with 24K gold leaf, of course.
Bee Pollen & Roasted Coconut Butter – United States
Kokus in NYC (@kokus_nyc) is a new organic, raw, plant-based soft serve made from organic cultured coconut cream and lightly sweetened with raw honey. Healthy and creative toppings include bee pollen, roasted coconut butter, crystallized ginger, spiced turmeric honey sauce, and crushed plantain chips.
Black Sesame Macaroons – Canada
Tofino Licks (@tofino_licks) gets its toppings from local businesses in Tofino, BC, Canada, including black sesame macaroons and meringue cookies baked by 1909 Kitchen. Tofino Licks makes their own sauces.
Blue Rich Tea Sauce – The Philippines
BLK 513 (@blk513ph) continues to innovate with vibrant looking housemade sauces like Fresh Strawberry Cheesecake, Matcha Milk Cake, Spice Cookie Caramel, and Cereal Milk Sauce. The latest, Blue Rich Tea sauce, is blue. They also make toppings like Matcha Macadamia granola.
Chamoy & Tamarindo Sticks – United States
Around the time that Yogurtland introduced its new Spicy Sweet Chili Mango Sorbet last August, some Yogurtland locations added “Froyo Loco” Mexican toppings. These included chamoy, tamarindo sticks, Tajin, and salt & chili fruit pulps. Yogurtland Pico Rivera has chamoy sauce, Tajin and tamarindo. Chamoy sauce is made with pickled fruit, vinegar and chile powder, so it’s spicy, tangy, salty, sour and sweet. Some of the Froyo Loco toppings are still available at select Yogurtland locations.
Flapjacks – United Kingdom
We’re not sure what these are, but they look like oat bars in the picture from The Frogurt Pot (@thefrogurtpot) UK. They are not pancakes. Rather, they are a British baked oat bar that resembles American granola bars.
Grass Jelly & Gingko Nuts – Thailand
Tokyo Bean in Thailand focuses on beans, offering soy milk, soy soft serve, and froyo. You can get your froyo topped with different beans, gingko nuts, and with the Chinese dessert, grass jelly (aka herbal jelly).
Maple Bacon – United States
At San Francisco’s fancy food shop in the Mission, Foodhall (@foodhallsf), you can get Italian organic froyo with whole strips of maple bacon, olive oil, and sea salt.
Mochi Ice Cream – United States
Who said that froyo and ice cream can’t get along? The first 16 Handles x Mochidoki at TurnStyle Underground Market (@16handlesxmochidoki) in NYC is the perfect place to combine your love of frozen yogurt with your love of mochi ice cream. Mochidoki makes all natural, premium mochi ice cream in small batches.
Musk Sticks – Australia
Musk sticks are an Australian confection also found in New Zealand. They’re semi-soft sticks that are chalky, chewy and taste like eating musk perfume. Add musk sticks to your froyo at Yo-Chi (@iloveyochi) where toppings wars occur on a monthly basis.
Pomegranate Molasses – Australia
Pomegranate molasses is a popular syrup used in Middle Eastern dishes. At Jay’s Yogurt (@jaysyogurt) in Australia, ask for a drizzle of pomegranate molasses on your hand-churned froyo.
Tomato Honey – United States
The Pool recently took over the Four Seasons restaurant space in NYC. Dine by the indoor pool and enjoy made-to-order frozen yogurt with six seasonal toppings. Toppings change, but could include tomato honey, yuzu curd, candied strawberry caramel, and chocolate crumbs. Fancy!
Ube Shell – The Philippines
We’re used to seeing chocolate shell, but Red Mango Philippines (@redmangoph) created an ube flavored shell.
