It was a busy month for froyo shop openings, even though fall has officially begun. We found 27 froyo shop openings in September, representing 14 countries. In August, we found 20 froyo shop openings. The US led the way with 6 openings, followed by India with 4 and Malaysia with 3. Llaollao, Europe’s largest froyo chain, continued to open new branches with five openings this month. Myfroyoland was close behind with four new openings.
We also found 15 closings. Sadly, several decade-old froyo shops closed for good this month. A few moved or are looking for a new space.

September 26 was the final day of Front Porch Desserts. Front Porch opened in 2013. The manager cited the pandemic as the reason for closing, as well as the health of the owner. He writes, “Overnight in March 2020, we lost more than half our business, and things have not improved this year. Steve (my Dad and Co-Owner with my Mom, Lynn) was diagnosed in March 2021 with prostate cancer…Steve & Lynn have never made a single cent from Front Porch, they have always put me, my sister, and all of our employees first above all else to their own detriment. Steve has worked countless unpaid hours, never taking a salary or any reimbursement for his time, the same for Lynn. They have poured an immense amount of their own money, time & effort into the shop that they will never get back now. And all because of how much they care about their children, and all the employees we have hired over the years. This is not how we saw this period of our life coming to an end, but that’s just the way the world works sometimes. Menchie’s only location in Minnesota closed on 9/11. The owner posted a message on Facebook: “Friends, we’re sorry to report that Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt in Highland Park will be closing permanently on the weekend of Sept. 11. We’ve loved being part of the Highland Park community over the past decade, and we’re excited to see what else transpires in our space and the rest of Highland Village. All gift cards, certificates and coupons will be honored in the next few weeks, so we hope to see you stop in before we close.”

Nuberri closed the doors of its Kerry Forest location in Tallahassee, Florida on September 26. The closing announcement was posted on their website: “Since COVID hit last year, to say it has been a struggle for us would be an understatement. We simply cannot afford to remain open and therefore our last day of business at this location will be Sunday. We extend a heartfelt thank you to, our guests, who have supported us these past years. We are honored that you voted us Best of Tallahassee and appreciate that you have let us share so many of your happy times and celebrations. We know our Blair Stone Road location (at Park in the Publix shopping center) is not terribly convenient for you but hope you will come see us when you are in that area. We plan on doing business there for years to come.”

Serendipity Sweets in Erie, PA closed but they hope to move the business. They wrote that

After 10 years, Smile Yogurt closed the K11 store. They will relocate within the same Shopping Art Gallery shopping center in Hong Kong.

After six years in business, Strawberry Fields Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt in Union, NJ has closed. The assets are for sale. The owners posted the following message on Instagram, “That’s a wrap! Thank you for the 6 years! Great customers and really good memories!”
