It’s time for our annual look back at the new flavors that were introduced in 2018. Menchie’s introduced the most new flavors, 17. Here’s our list of 120 new flavors for 2018, organized by shop or mix producer:

Of the 120 new flavors on our list, 51% were frozen yogurt flavors, 49% were froyo alternatives. The specific breakdown of froyo alternatives was:

  • Vegan (not sorbet): 16%
  • Ice Cream: 13%
  • Sorbet: 11%
  • Gelato: 6%
  • Italian Ice: 2%
  • Frozen Custard: 2%

Last year, 30% were froyo alternatives. Frozen yogurt shops continued to introduce new soft serve ice cream and vegan flavors. Yogurtland introduced its first light ice cream, Butter Pecan, and its first dairy alternative frozen yogurt, Coconut Cream Pie. 16 Handles introduced its first frozen custard and Italian ice. Dannon YoCream introduced its first dairy alternative soft serve, Silk Almondmilk.

Brand partnership flavors were huge; 28% of the new flavors were developed using branded ingredients from Kellogg’s, Nabisco (Oreo), Hershey, Dove, Ghirardelli, Mrs. Thinsters, etc. Almost all the new flavors from Menchie’s and Orange Leaf featured branded ingredients.

In terms of specific flavors, fruit flavors led the way (32.5%), followed by cookie-based flavors (13%), candy-based flavors (12%), dessert-based (cake, pie, cheesecake) flavors (12%), drink-based flavors (9%), and cereal-based flavors (6%). While it can be difficult to tell from the flavor name whether a flavor is tart or not, it does appear that there has been a sharp decline in tart-based flavors. Indulgent flavors have taken over. Flavors weren’t that creative this year, with a few exceptions, like Strawberry Rose from Yogurtland.
