What can happen! Fire is a danger in any type of building. The first aid response to a fire is using a fire extinguisher. If it’s expected that employees try to extinguish a fire, make sure they know how to use the extinguisher.
ALWAYS
- Know where the fire alarm boxes are throughout the Yogurt Shop.
- Learn the evacuation procedures and the established escape routes from each building
- Know where fire extinguishers are located and what types of fires they are rated for.
- Know the fire rating of materials in your work area.
- If you are expected to use a fire extinguisher to fight a fire, you must be trained to do so.
If there is a fire…extinguish the fire yourself only if:
- You have been properly trained in how to use a fire extinguisher.
- You are certain the fire is small enough for you to handle.
- You have the right extinguisher available.
- Otherwise sound the alarm immediately and begin evacuating the building. In a fire emergency, every second counts.
When using an extinguisher remember P-A-S-S:
P – Pull the locking pin before using the fire extinguisher.
A – Aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire, not at the flames or smoke.
S – Squeeze the lever of the fire extinguisher to operate and discharge.
S – Sweep the fire extinguisher back and forth at the base of the fire to extinguish.
Most extinguishers will only allow about 10-seconds of extinguishing material. Prevention is the key when it comes to fires. Good housekeeping, proper storage procedures and safe work practices will reduce the likelihood that a fire will destroy valuable property or injure you or a fellow employee.
