New Froyo Flavors & Flavor Trends in 2020

It’s time for our annual round-up of new froyo flavors. This was a challenging year for froyo businesses. Due to COVID-19, many shops reduced hours of operation and did not offer samples. Therefore, there were fewer new flavors introduced this year (55 this year, 88 last year). But, there were new flavor introductions. Menchie’s continued to introduce the most new flavors.

We’ve organized the new flavors alphabetically by shop or manufacturer.

Froyo vs. Froyo Alternatives

Of the new flavors, 50% were froyo and 50% froyo alternatives. This was about the same as in 2019. Of the froyo alternatives, vegan soft serve was the most popular, accounting for 36% of the new flavors. Interestingly, 16 Handles were all dairy-free, as they were in 2019. This year, 16 Handles introduced oat milk vegan flavors. It was the only chain on this list to offer oat milk based soft serve.

Branded Ingredient Partnerships

There weren’t as many brand partnerships this year, but there were a few because of Menchie’s: Nabisco (Oreo, Nilla), Snickers, Hi-Chew, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, The Cheesecake Factory, and Auro Chocolate (with Pinkberry Philippines). Oreo and Hi-Chew are returning brands from last year’s list.

Specific Flavors

In terms of specific flavors, fruit flavors led the way, accounting for 38% of the new flavors. Baked goods/dessert inspired flavors continued to be popular, accounting for 30% of new flavors, with 4 new cheesecake flavors and 2 non-cheesecake flavors with cream cheese. Candy flavors represented 14% of new flavors, tied with chocolate (14%), and followed by coffee (6%).

We were pleased to see local flavors like Pinkberry Philippines Auro Dark Chocolate froyo and Marcel’s South African flavors, Braai’d Marshmallow and Peppermint Tart.
