New Flavors Introduced in 2021 and Flavor Trends

We’ve been tracking new flavor introductions all year and it’s time to share our round-up of new froyo and froyo alternative flavors introduced this year. We found 76 new flavors this year compared to last year’s 55. The new flavor introductions made a nice recovery but are still below pre-pandemic levels.

Menchie’s led the way with 18 new flavors, followed by 16 Handles, with 14 new flavors.

We’ve organized the list alphabetically by shop name and chronologically within each shop with the earliest introduction mentioned first.

Froyo vs. Froyo Alternatives

This year, new froyo flavors accounted for 58% of the new flavors, compared to 50% in 2020. Of the non-froyo alternatives, non-dairy alternatives made with milk alternatives were the most popular, accounting for 20% of the new flavors. Oat milk was the most popular milk alternative. 16 Handles partnered with Oatly and was the first froyo chain to offer oat milk soft serve last year. This year, Menchie’s and Yogurtland introduced their first oat milk based soft serve flavors.

Specific Flavor Trends

In terms of specific flavors, fruit flavors led the way again this year; fruit flavors were found in 34% of the new flavors (vs. 38% in 2020). The pastry/dessert flavors were found in 20% of new flavors, cookies tied with chocolate for third place, these flavors represented 15% of new flavor. Coffee and tea flavors accounted for 11% of new flavors.

Milk tea and boba flavors, cookie dough, buns, green vegetables, and spicy flavors were popular this year.
