Froyo in Tanzania: History, Trends, & Shops

In Tanzania, the introduction of frozen yogurt was part of a broader trend towards healthier eating habits and the growing popularity of Western-style desserts. Soft serve ice cream has been available since the 1960s (e.g., Sno Cream). You can also find hard scoop ice cream, Italian gelato, and shaved snow. Froyo Tanzania, a self-serve froyo shop, claimed to have opened the first froyo parlor in 2013 in Dar es Salaam. It wasn’t open for long and the same fate befell other froyo shops.

Today, there are three shops that serve froyo, Snoopy’s (two branches) and Zaidi, but they’re dessert shops. Froyo isn’t their main product. All three shops are in Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania in East Africa is known as the home of Mount Kilimanjaro and Serengeti National Park. The population is 67.44 million. It is considered a developing economy with a GDP of 79.16 billion (US dollars), 81st in the world and second in East Africa, behind Kenya.
