Happy Persian New Year! Did you know that ice cream may have been invented in Persia, the predecessor of modern-day Iran? But our interest is in froyo, of course. We investigated the history of froyo in Iran.
The first froyo shops in Iran were opened by Yogoberry, the Brazilian counter-serve frozen yogurt franchise. Yogoberry had four branches in Tehran alone. The first two opened may have opened as early as 2012. The Iranian master franchisee had the authority to open locations throughout the Middle East. Yogoberry’s menu included frozen yogurt, acai, juices, smoothies, popsicles, waffles, and fruit salad.
We believe that there are eight froyo shops open in Iran. That’s very few, considering the population size of the largest cities and the fondness for yogurt. Most of these frozen yogurt shops opened between 2016 – 2018, and most are self-serve. We found ten closed froyo shops, including four Yogoberry locations. Yogoberry is the only multinational froyo chain that has opened in Iran.
Iran has a population of nearly 92 million. The largest cities (by population) are the capital city of Tehran (7.15 million), Mashhad (2.3 million), Isfahan (1.55 million), Karaj (1.44 million), Tabriz (1.4 million), and Shiraz (1.25 million). The economy was characterized by stagnation from 2009 – 2019. The country still faces economic sanctions, and droughts have impacted its agricultural sector. Rising oil prices have helped, but high inflation has dampened consumption and investment. The country continues to face significant economic uncertainty. The GDP ranks 36th in the world.
