The Edge of Seventeen

Movies have inspired froyo flavors, spoons, contests, cup designs, and more. We look at when froyo actually is shown in a movie. Menchie’s, TCBY, Pinkberry, Yogurtland, Golden Spoon, Penguin’s, and Yogen Fruz have all appeared on the silver screen.

The movies are listed in alphabetical order with the release date.

  • American Psycho, 2000
    • Jean is Patrick Bateman’s secretary at a Wall Street firm. After dinner, Jean and Patrick go back to his apartment where she eats a pint of Yogen Fruz on the couch. Earlier, the Yogen Fruz pint is shown in the freezer of Patrick Bateman with a severed head.
  • Cash Out, not yet released
    • Cash Out stars John Travolta and involves a hostage situation. One scene was filmed at Freeze Frame Frozen Yogurt in Columbus, Georgia in 2022.
  • Horrible Bosses 2, 2014
    • In the sequel to Horrible Bosses, the three protagonists decide to kidnap Rex, and demand ransom from his wealthy father. They hire Jones to kidnap Rex. Jones’ dream is to own a Pinkberry. He uses the ransom money to open three Pinkberry locations.
  • Deadpool, 2016
    • When Wade meets Vanessa for the first time, he offers her cash and his Yogurtland rewards card in return for 48 minutes of her time. His card is actually a Yogurtland gift card but he called it a rewards card. We would have been more impressed had he flashed a Yogurtland Platinum member card.
  • Disturbing Behavior, 1998
    • In this teen psychological horror flick starring Katie Holmes, James Marsden, and Nick Stahl, Steve (James Marsden) moves to Cradle Bay in Washington. On his first day at the new high school, he befriends three outcasts. They warn him about the student clique known as the Blue Ribbons. Steve goes to a yogurt shop to meet his friend when he runs into the evil Blue Ribbons.
  • The Duff, 2015
    • Bianca is devastated to learn that she’s known as The DUFF in her group, the Designated Ugly Fat Friend. With the help of her popular jock neighbor, Wesley, she seeks to transform herself. Wes and Bianca go to the mall Wes where Wes challenges Bianca to talk to a bunch of random guys to help her get over her fear of talking to her crush, Toby. She finally gets the number of a froyo shop employee. He’s a toppings consultant.
  • The Edge of Seventeen, 2016
    • In this coming-of-age high school flick, Hailee Steinfeld plays an outcast named Nadine. In contrast, her brother is Mr. Popular. Nadine is shown eating a froyo waffle cone at TCBY. She argues with the TCBY employee that she should be allowed to use the bathroom even though it’s for employees only.
  • Gremlins 2: The New Batch, 1990
    • Three gremlins are eating froyo and candy at a Penguin’s Frozen Yogurt. A customer sees one of the gremlins, Mohawk, and mistakes him for a rat. Mohawk emerges from the candies and spooks everyone.
  • Lazer Team, 2015
    • In this sci-fi film, the members of the Lazer Team, must save the earth from evil aliens. Mindy and Zach discuss how much they love froyo.
  • Magic Mike XXL, 2015
    • Magic Mike XXL covers a period where Magic Mike has retired but he goes on a road trip with his former troupe. Troupe members Tito and Tobias own a van that they hope to turn into a mobile frozen yogurt business. The van is the one used for the road trip and ruined. The name of the business was Fro-yo’ Body. 
  • The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, 2000
    • In this sequel to The Nutty Professor, Eddie Murphy plays several members of the Klump family, including the professor, Sherman. The professor is embarrassed by his family’s behavior. His nephew places himself under the nozzle of the Golden Spoon froyo machine and eats his froyo directly from the machine.
  • Show Dogs, 2018
    • In Show Dogs, a police dog goes undercover with an FBI agent at a dog show to save a baby panda from an illegal sale. The dogs attend a party where you can see a Menchie’s froyo machine.
  • Still Alice, 2014
    • Pinkberry (2873 Broadway, NYC) appears several times in this movie about early onset Alzheimer’s, starring Julianne Moore as Alice. Alice, a brilliant linguistics professor at Columbia, has a favorite Pinkberry order, original tart with blueberry and coconut, which you see her enjoying early in the movie. Later, she and her husband go to Pinkberry. Her disease has progressed to the point where she no longer remembers her favorite Pinkberry order.
