IFYA Turns Thirteen

The State of Froyo

Our association anniversary is the perfect time for a mid-year check-in for the frozen yogurt industry. You’ve probably seen some of the recent froyo comeback coverage in the news. And yes, the store openings reflect this surge in interest in frozen yogurt.

We tracked 408 new businesses serving frozen yogurt from January – June 2026, compared to 309 new froyo businesses in the first half of 2025. This is an increase of 32%. Also, the United States had the most openings every month of the first half of the year, for a total of 102 new froyo businesses. In other words, 1 in 4 new froyo businesses during the first half of the year opened in the United States.

During the past five years, the peak of Google search traffic for frozen yogurt in the United States occurred in June 2021, but this was nearly matched in May 2026. Also, the low last winter was higher than the previous lows – meaning there was more interest in frozen yogurt this winter than in the previous four winters. The U.S. continues to drive the global trend, with the highest relative search interest of any country.

Over the past 12 months, the top five regions worldwide for frozen yogurt search interest were:

  1. United States
  2. Australia
  3. Canada
  4. Lebanon
  5. New Zealand

Google adjusts for population size by using the proportion of all search queries rather than absolute query counts.

In the United States, the top five states for frozen yogurt search interest over the past 12 months were:

  1. New York
  2. Florida
  3. Idaho
  4. Wyoming
  5. California

This was surprisingly different from the 2025 list, with four of the top five states located in the West. In 2025, the top states were: 1. Idaho, 2. California, 3. New Jersey, 4. Arizona, 5. Washington.

Both Miami and New York City have seen a wave of new froyo shops over the past month, which may explain why both are in the top five. Recall that Google adjusts for population size by using the proportion of all search queries rather than absolute query counts.
