Two homegrown concepts—Frozz and Yoghurt Barn—once led the Dutch frozen yogurt market. Both brands have since closed, marking the end of the country’s froyo boom.
Frozz: The Pioneer of Dutch Frozen Yogurt (2010–2019)
Frozz introduced frozen yogurt to the Netherlands in 2010, beginning as a mobile froyo truck before expanding rapidly. At its peak, Frozz operated 25 brick‑and‑mortar counter‑serve shops, pop‑ups, and even a franchise location in Portugal. The brand extended into retail with packaged Frozz frozen yogurt in supermarkets, and its frozen yogurt was served on KLM World Business Class flights.
As the business grew, Frozz diversified to address seasonality challenges. Some locations added Oodlz Noodle Soup, a warm, savory concept designed to boost winter sales. Although the founders were inspired by U.S. froyo culture, Frozz emphasized local Dutch dairy and natural ingredients.
The last Frozz shop closed in 2019.
Yoghurt Barn / YB: A Yogurt‑Forward Café Model (2012–2023)
Yoghurt Barn took a broader approach, positioning itself as a yogurt‑centric café rather than a pure frozen yogurt shop. Its menu included multiple yogurt varieties—including frozen yogurt—alongside baked goods, toast, coffee, tea, and overnight oats. The brand even published a cookbook, Yoghurt Barn, in 2017.
The company rebranded as YB by Yoghurt Barn in 2021, becoming fully plant‑based and earning Certified B Corporation status. YB operated with a strong sustainability mission, claiming to be climate‑positive since 2020. At its height, YB operated 13 locations in major city centers, train stations, and Schiphol Airport.
The brand’s last Instagram post was in 2023, around the time the remaining locations closed.
Other Froyo Concepts and International Entrants
Beyond Frozz and Yoghurt Barn, the Netherlands saw a wave of independent froyo shops and mobile trucks during the 2010s. Several international chains also entered the market, including:
- Chillbox
- Llaollao
- Smooy
- Yogen Fruz
In total, IFYA identified over 60 frozen yogurt shops and trucks that have since closed.
The first known self‑serve froyo shop in the Netherlands may have been Koel, which opened in 2013.
Peak Popularity: 2014
The height of the Dutch froyo craze occurred in 2014, when frozen yogurt was widely available in major cities. Even non‑froyo concepts joined the trend. For example, YoYo Fresh Tea Bar, a boba milk tea brand that launched in Rotterdam in 2012, offered frozen yogurt at its early locations.
Why Froyo Resonated with Dutch Consumers
Frozen yogurt aligned naturally with Dutch eating habits. The Netherlands has a strong yogurt culture—yogurt is commonly eaten for breakfast or as a snack—so froyo felt familiar, not foreign. The product’s perceived health benefits and customizable toppings also appealed to Dutch preferences for fresh, simple, high‑quality foods.
Market Context: The Netherlands Today
The Netherlands is a prosperous, highly developed economy with a population approaching 18.5 million and a median age of 41.5. The country is globally competitive in trade, logistics, technology, chemicals, and agriculture, all of which shape consumer expectations around quality and sustainability.

These urban centers were the core of the froyo boom—and today, they remain the only places where frozen yogurt can still be found.
Current Places to Get Froyo
- Amy’s Fresh and Frozen Yoghurt, Dominee Jan Scharpstraat 298, unit 40, 3011 GZ Rotterdam opened at The Markthal in 2014. The yogurt is local and organic. The kiosk offers counter-serve frozen yogurt.
- Froyo2go is a seasonal mobile frozen yogurt business based in Sauwerd. There are two froyo trucks, a vintage 1968 Renault Estafette and a vintage Peugeot J9. The trucks can be found at festivals and events.
- YoYo’s Ice Corner, Rijnstraat 58B, 1078 RD Amsterdam, opened in 2016. The counter-serve shop specializes in homemade ice cream and frozen yogurt.
- YoYo’s Ice Corner, Hugo de Grootplein 18-H, Amsterdam, opened in 2022.
Closed Froyo Shops
- Aardebei, Spuistraat 106, Amsterdam, Netherlands 1012VA, was a strawberry-themed café that served frozen yogurt and strawberry treats from 2016 – 2017.
- Chillbox, Vier Meren Shopping Centre, Burgermeester van Stampein 46 2132 BH Hoofddorp, was a self-serve Greek frozen yogurt franchise that opened in the early 2010’s.
- Chillbox, Marktlaan 190 2132 Hoofddorp was a branch of the Greek franchise.
- Chillbox Amsterdam – unknown address or dates of operation; it may have opened in 2014.
- De Melksnor was a mobile froyo business based in Tilburg that was active from 2015 – 2022. There were two De Melksnor units. One was a vintage van and the other a trailer.
- Frizolino, Beethovenstraat 62-64, 1077 JL Amsterdam, was a counter-serve froyo shop with one soft serve machine. There was also a Frizolino in Vienna, Austria. The last review was 2021 and last Instagram post was in 2021. The first Instagram post was also in 2021.
- Froyo & Limburgia, Stationsplein 1, 8071 CL Nunspeet, opened in 2016 and closed in 2022.
- Frozi Yogi, Heuvelstraat 118, 5038 AH Tilburg, was a self-serve froyo and cookie dough shop that opened in 2014 and closed in 2020.
- Frozen Yoghurt Company, Utrechtsestraat 115, 1017 VL Amsterdam, Centrum, was a counter-serve froyo shop that opened in 2012. The froyo was organic.
- Frozz Frozen Yogurt, Leidsestraat 69, 1017 DK Amsterdam may have been the first location to open in 2010. The froyo was counter-serve. It became Oodlz Noodle Soup in 2013. Oodlz was their noodle soup concept.
- Frozz, Rokin 30 1012 KT Amsterdam, may have opened in 2011; it was the last location to close in 2019.
Frozz, Nieuwstraat 15, 6211 CR Maastricht, opened in 2011 (and became Topzz, see the Topzz listing for more information). - Frozz, Utrechtsestraat 27 1017 VH Amsterdam, was reviewed in 2012 – 2013.
- Frozz & Oodlz, Reguliersbreestraat 41, 1017 CM Amsterdam opened in 2013.
- Frozz & Oodlz, de Pijp, 1e van der Helststraat 57, opened in 2013. The last review was in 2014.
- Frozz & Oodlz, Stadshart Amstelveen, Amsterdam opened in 2013 and may have closed in 2016
- Frozz in Dordrecht may have opened in 2012 and closed in 2013.

- Frozz, Passage 67, Nieuwe Passage, The Hague, closed in 2016.
- Ijssalon Frizz, Scharlo 10, 1815 CP Alkmaar, made Facebook posts in 2015. It was an ice cream shop that also served frozen yogurt.
- Koel, Nieuwendijk 76 1012 MP Amsterdam, was a self-serve froyo shop that was open in 2013. The frozen yogurt was organic.
- Llaollao, Gevers Deynootweg 99038, 2586 BZ Den Haag, opened at the Palace Promenade Shopping Centre at The Hague in October 2017. The Spanish froyo franchise, the largest froyo franchise in Europe, is counter-serve. It closed in 2018.
- Scoops Frozen Yoghurt & Ice Cream, Veemarktstraat 29, 4811 ZC Breda, started out as a froyo and ice cream shop in 2015, then added macarons and vegan ice cream. The final day was September 25, 2022.
- Smooy, Dominee Jan Scharpstraat 298 3011 Rotterdam, opened at the Markthal in 2017 and closed in 2021. The Spanish frozen yogurt franchise served crepes, bubble waffles, smoothies, muffins, frappes, and more. The frozen yogurt was counter-serve.
- TCBY, Beurspassage 10 1012 LW Amsterdam was likely open before Frozz launched.
- Topzz, Nieuwstraat 15, 6211 CR Maastricht, was a froyo shop that also served hot noodle soup. It closed in May 2023. It opened in 2011 as Frozz, and the name changed to Topzz in 2017.
- West Coast Frozen Yoghurt, Haarlemmerdijk 188 1013 JK Amsterdam was a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2014. After closing the shop, they switched to retail – offering packaged froyo at supermarkets.
- Yo Frizz, Coolsingel 61, 3012 GP Rotterdam was a froyo shop that may have opened in 2015.
- Yogen Fruz, Reguliersbreestraat 19 1017 CN Amsterdam, opened a self-serve branch in Amsterdam in 2013. It may have closed in 2018. The last FB post was in 2018.
- Yogen Fruz, Rembrandtweg 41a, 1181 GE Amstelveen, opened at Stadshart Amstelveen shopping center in July 2014. Amstelveen is a suburb of Amsterdam. It’s unclear when it closed but sometime before 2018.
- Yogen Fruz, Hannie Dankbaar Passage 16 1053 RT Amsterdam opened the third branch at Foodhallen in Amsterdam in October 2014.
- Yogen Fruz had a froyo truck in 2014, which was present at the Taste of Amsterdam festival.
- Yoghurt Barn, Vinkenburgstraat 15 Utrecht, was the first branch of Yoghurt Barn. It opened in 2011 and closed in 2024.
- Yoghurt Barn, de Eerste van der Helstraat 80, was the first Yoghurt Barn location to open in Amsterdam in 2011 or 2012.
- Yoghurt Barn, Station Amsterdam Centraal, Stationsplein 17B, 1012 AB Amsterdam Centrum was reviewed in 2018. Amsterdam Centraal is a major railway station.
- Yoghurt Barn, Eerste van der Helststraat 80 De Pijp 1072 NZ Amsterdam may have been open 2013 – 2018?

YoYo Fresh Tea Bar, Rotterdam opened in 2012, and some of the early locations offered frozen yogurt; the second location opened in Rotterdam. It’s unclear how many locations served froyo or for how long.
