A Spanish colony from 1522 – 1821, Nicaragua is the largest (in terms of area) country in Central America and the third most populous. The current population is 6.824 million. The largest city is the capital city of Managua (1.061 million), followed by León (213,718), Masaya (191,574), and Tipitapa (156,523). While large in area, Nicaragua is the least developed country in Central America. The economy is dominated by the agricultural sector. It has been plagued by trade and budget deficits in recent years.
We found eight froyo shops that are currently open, and they are all counter-serve. Most are mall-based and located in Managua. Moyo, a Mexican franchise, has five branches in Nicaragua. The first Nicaraguan branch of Moyo opened in 2018. It serves fat-free Bulgarian yogurt ice cream. Most of the current froyo shops are relatively new; none is over 6 years old.
We found four closed froyo shops. Tweety’s Froyo in Estelí opened in 2014 and was the first self-serve froyo shop in Nicaragua. It’s also the earliest froyo shop that we could find.
We spotted several fresh yogurt, paleta, and ice cream shops in Nicaragua as well.
Current Froyo Shops
- Beta Fro-yo, Av. Vanderbuilt, San Juan del Sur 48600, Nicaragua, opened in 2024. The first froyo shop in San Juan del Sur is counter-serve and also offers coffee and smoothies.
- Moyo Galerias, Comercial Galerías, Pista Jean Paul Genie, Managua, may have opened in 2019. It is in a shopping center.
- Moyo Metrocentro, Ent Hotel Intercontinental Managua, Managua 14005, is another mall-based branch. It may have opened in 2021.
- Moyo Multicentro Las Americas, 4QQC+V85, Managua, may have opened in 2022. It is mall-based.
- Moyo, XWQ2+G94, Masaya, Nicaragua, opened in Paseo Masaya in 2023 or 2024. It is located at Paseo Masaya, a shopping mall.
- Moyo, JVCJ+Q7R, 12, opened at Centro Plaza Occidente, a shopping mall in Chinandega in 2023.
- YogoYogo, Km.11 Plaza Praderas, Módulo 10, Carretera a Masaya, Managua, is a counter-serve froyo shop that may have opened in 2019.
- YogoYogo, Villa Fontana, Managua, Nicaragua, opened a new branch at the Villa Fontana shopping mall on December 18, 2024, at Plaza Fontana in Managua.
Closed Froyo Shops
- Tweety’s Froyo, Gallo más Gallo 1 1/2 cuadras al Este, Estelí, opened in 2014 and closed in 2017. It was the first self-serve froyo shop in Nicaragua.
- Yogo Cup, W3CH+7F7, Matagalpa, closed in April 2025. The shop opened in 2021.
- Yogu Leon, Parque Los Poetas 3C, 15vrs. Al norte, Leon, opened on August 12, 2023, and we’re not sure if it’s still open.
