Froyo Arrived Late to Ghana
Compared to the United States, Europe, and parts of Asia, frozen yogurt arrived late to Ghana. The earliest shops didn’t appear until the early 2010s. Most of the country’s current froyo shops are less than five years old, reflecting a wave of recent expansion driven by rising middle‑class demand, mall culture, and international brands entering the market.
Our research found 27 frozen yogurt shops currently operating in Ghana, with the majority concentrated in Accra and Kumasi.
The First Froyo Shops (2013)
The year 2013 marks the true beginning of Ghana’s froyo era. Two pioneering shops opened that year:
- Nominom – Ghana’s first counter‑serve frozen yogurt shop, introducing the classic “walk up to the counter and choose your toppings” model.
- Tresence Café – The first self‑serve froyo concept in the country, bringing the global “weigh‑and‑pay” trend to Ghana.
These early shops set the stage for what would become a much larger wave of froyo growth in the late 2010s.
Pinkberry’s Arrival and Rapid Expansion
The biggest turning point for froyo in Ghana came in 2017, when Pinkberry opened its first Ghana location. The brand expanded aggressively, tapping into Ghana’s growing appetite for premium quick‑service desserts. By 2022, Pinkberry was operating 15 branches. Today, Pinkberry operates 22 branches, making it by far the largest frozen yogurt chain in Ghana. Most Pinkberry shops are located in Accra, where demand is strongest and mall‑based retail continues to grow.
Closures and Turnover
Like any young food sector, Ghana’s froyo market has seen experimentation, expansion, and churn. We identified 16 closed froyo shops, most of which were counter‑serve concepts.
Still, the overall trend is upward: more openings than closings, more neighborhoods gaining access to froyo, and more Ghanaians embracing the category.

- Frolato, 12 Boundary Rd, Accra, East Legon, opened in July 2022. It is counter-serve and also offers juices, smoothies, and shakes.
- Frolato, JWG8+85X, Spintex Rd, Accra, opened in July 2024
- Pinkberry, HPPF+4V7, Awoshie, opened in August 2023
- Pinkberry, MR89+MV7, Accra, is the Haatso location that moved to Center Point Mall – Atomic Junction in 2022
- Pinkberry, Fifth Circular Rd, Accra, also known as Labone, opened in Ghana in 2017.
- Pinkberry, 136 La-Bawaleshi Rd, Accra, known as the East Legon branch, opened in 2021
- Pinkberry, Teshie Rasta Rd, Accra, may have opened in 2022. It is known as the Teshie branch.
- Pinkberry, JWJ4+X45, Accra, known as the Spintex branch, opened in 2021
- Pinkberry, GPQM+6XG, Exhibition St, Accra, known as the Dansoman branch, opened in December 2021
- Pinkberry, SCC Junction Bus Stop, Accra – Cape Coast Road, Weija, opened in February 2022
- Pinkberry, MX6M+H6H, Tema, opened in May 2022
- Pinkberry, St Johns – Dome – Kwabenya – Brekusu Rd, Accra, opened in September 2022
- Pinkberry, Santa Maria, Accra, may have opened in 2023

- Pinkberry, Elephant St, Amasaman, is co-located with Chickenman and Pizzaman. It opened in 2023.
- Pinkberry, Bawjiase Road, Kasoa, Accra, opened in 2023. It is known as the Kasoa branch.
- Pinkberry, 132 Nii Okaiman West Main Road, Chantan, Accra, known as the Tabora branch, opened in 2023.
- Pinkberry, Okponglo-Legon Road, Accra, is inside The New Total Fuel Station on Okponglo-Legon Road in Accra, Ghana. It opened in 2023
- Pinkberry, HPCW+66R, Accra, opened at Ablekuma Curve in 2023
- Yole, Regimanuel Junction, Spintex Road, opposite Goil Filling Station, Accra, opened a kiosk at Melcom Mall in December 2023. The Yole franchise is known for zero sugar added, zero dairy options. This was Yole’s first branch in West Africa. It is counter-serve.
- Yole, Shop No 29 B, Accra Mall, Plot C11, Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, Spintex Road, opened at the Accra Mall in December 2025
- Yole, Sky View Towers, Cantonment City Street, Cantonments, Accra, opened in January 2026.
Closed Froyo Shops
- Frolato, JQQ5+CFX, Unnamed Road, Accra, was a counter-serve froyo shop at Achimota Mall. It may have opened in 2021.

- Nominom, JRCG+RJR, Accra, was an ice cream and frozen yogurt shop that opened at the Accra Mall. In addition to counter-serve froyo, it served pastries, drinks, and shaved ice. It may opened in 2015 and closed in 2025.
- Nominom, JQQ5+4P, Accra, was located at Achimota Mall. It is not listed in the current mall directory, so we assume that it has closed. It likely opened after 2015. It was open in 2020.
- Nominom, N 1, Accra, opened in 2014 at West Hills Mall.
- Nominom, Spintex Road branch opened in 2013 in Accra, with an unknown closing date. located opposite Bank of Africa and adjacent to Basilissa
- Nominom, MX2Q+G5X, Tema, the most recent review was posted in 2020 and the first in 2016.
- Nominom, Afiena, Ghana, is mentioned on Nominom’s social accounts, unclear dates of operation
- Nominom, Dawhenya, is mentioned on Nominom’s social accounts, unclear dates of operation
- Nominom, Dans (short for Dansoman, a suburb of Accra?) is mentioned on Nominom’s social accounts, unclear dates of operation.
- Pinkberry, Lake Rd, Kumasi, opened at Kumasi City Mall in 2017. We’re not sure when it closed, but it was likely 2020 – 2022. It was the second Pinkberry to open in Ghana.
- Pinkberry, Adum, Kumasi, was the original location in Kumasi that operated from 2017 – 2018.
- Pinkberry, Haatso‑Atomic Road, near Awoshie Junction, Awoshie, may have opened in 2017; it moved to a new location in Haatso in 2022
- Swirley’s Frozen Yoghurt, 6th Street Osu, Accra, was a self-serve froyo shop that opened in January 2015. The last FB posts were made in 2019. The frozen yogurt was made with natural fat free yogurt and fresh milk.
- Tresence Café, 2nd Floor, Oxford Street Mall (Above Shoprite), Osu, Accra, was a self-serve frozen yogurt bar. It also served coffee, gelato, and sandwiches. It may have opened in 2013. It closed quietly many years ago. It was the first self-serve froyo concept in Ghana.
