Costa Rica is a small Central American nation with a population of 5.2 million. Famous for its beaches, volcanoes, and rainforests, the country protects roughly one‑quarter of its territory as national parks and reserves. Politically, Costa Rica is a democratic republic with a long tradition of stability.
We found 29 places to get frozen yogurt in Costa Rica, which is quite a lot considering the population size. At least three froyo shops are 10 years old or older. The first froyo shop to open may have been TCBY in 1998. While the TCBY outlets closed many years ago, you could find TCBY prepackaged consumer products (frozen yogurt and smoothies) at retailers like Walmart from 2019 – 2024. At least one shop opened every year from 2016 to 2026.
Moyo has the most frozen shops in Costa Rica, with 16 branches, or 57% of the froyo shops in Costa Rica. Moyo is a Mexican franchise. It was acquired by Grupo Herdez in 2019. Other large franchises include Flavorcup with two outlets, Tutti Frutti with one, and Yole with two. MYKA ijust opened in Escazú.
Moyo and Flavorcup are Mexican franchises. Both are counter-serve, although at least one Flavorcup branch was self-serve. While Flavorcup has two outlets, eight have closed. Yogurtmania, founded in 2013, was a local self-serve concept with three current outlets and three that have closed.
Economically, Costa Rica has been experiencing steady growth. Real per‑capita income increased by an average of 3% annually between 2004 and 2024, and in 2025, the country was classified as a high‑income economy. Despite this progress, inequality remains a challenge, with 17% of the population living in poverty. Costa Rica’s GDP per capita ranks 59th globally, reflecting its relatively strong economic performance within Latin America.
The capital and largest city, San José, has a population of 364,062. Other major urban centers include Alajuela (340,416), Desamparados (223,378), San Carlos (209,455), and Cartago (170,677).
