Froyo in Belize: History, Trends, & Shops

Nestled in Central America with the Caribbean Sea to the east and dense jungles to the west, Belize is a small country bordered by Mexico and Guatemala. It is the region’s only English-speaking nation, with deep cultural and economic ties to the Caribbean. With a 2024 population of approximately 417,000, Belize is one of the least densely populated countries in the Americas. Its people reflect a rich ethnic mosaic—Mestizo, Creole, Maya, Garifuna, and others—contributing to a vibrant cultural landscape.

Classified as an upper middle-income country by the World Bank, Belize’s economy is small but dynamic, led by tourism and agriculture & seafood exports. However, it also faces high public debt, inflation, and multidimensional poverty that affects over 22% of the population in 2024.

The largest cities by population are Belize City (61,461), San Ignacio (16,812), Orange Walk (15,298), Belmopan (13,381), and Dangriga (10,750).

We found five places to get frozen yogurt in Belize, six closed frozen yogurt shops, and two shops that are still open but no longer carry frozen yogurt. The first place to serve frozen yogurt may have been Mariano’s back in the 2010s. It was a mix-in style froyo made with a drill. There was a wave of self-serve froyo shops around 2014, which lasted a few years.

In recent years, Guatemala’s Sarita, founded in 1948, has opened three branches in Belize. It offers mix-in style frozen yogurt.

Places to Get Froyo

  • Mariano’s Frozen Yogurt & Ice Cream, Pescador Drive, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, is Mariano’s second branch. It opened in downtown San Pedro in 2011. Mariano’s served mix-in style froyo (froyo mixed with frozen fruit) back in 2011, but later added self-serve froyo and toppings sold by weight.
  • Sarita, Corner of La Loma Luz Boulevard &, Eve St, Santa Elena, opened in October 2022 and offers hard scoop ice cream, mix-in style frozen yogurt, ice cream cakes, and beverages.
  • Sarita, 66XP+R4W, Cardinal Ave, Belmopan, opened in April 2024
  • Sarita, W28M+37J, San Pedro, opened in 2023
  • Yogobean, GQ8G+268, Philip Goldson Hwy (Northern Highway), Belize City, opened in 2019. Yogobean is a self-serve froyo and coffee bar, offering four froyo flavors a day and toppings.

Closed Froyo Shops

  • Deja Moo Frozen Yogurt, Placencia Village 00000 Punta Placencia, opened in 2017 and closed in 2018. It also offered smoothies and shakes
  • Mariano’s Frozen Yogurt & Ice Cream, Pelican St, was the first Mariano’s to open
  • Yogert, Belize City, has closed. It was in the Fort George neighborhood
  • Yogobean, FRW9+J93, Belize City, opened in June 2020 and closed in December 2023
  • Yogobean, #2 Pescador Dr, San Pedro, opened in 2019 and closed in 2021.
  • Yo Mama Frozen Yogurt Bar, 18 Barrier Reef Fido’s Courtyard & Pier, Ambergris Caye, San Pedro, was a self-serve froyo shop that opened in 2014. It seems to be closed.

Still Open But No Longer Carries Froyo

  • The Creamery Frozen Yogurt & Ice Cream Shoppe, 53 #2 Avenida Hicaco Front Street, Caye Caulker, was known for its ice cream and frozen yogurt, but they seem to have stopped carrying frozen yogurt in 2018. The froyo was self-serve and sold by weight.
  • DandE’s Frozen Custard, Middle Street, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, now Caye Custard, was established 2005. They did offer frozen yogurt around 2019, but it is no longer mentioned.

Belize also has yogurt stores that sell non-frozen yogurt.
