2018 Froyo Chain Store Location Count

It’s time for our annual feature, the IFYA Froyo Chain Store Location Count – the 2018 edition. Find out how the largest froyo chains grew or shrunk this year, and by how much.

Overview

The top 10 largest frozen yogurt chains accounted for approximately 3,020 locations, down from 3,955 locations in 2017 and 4,335 locations last year. The number of frozen yogurt stores is declining. Only three of the largest chains grew this year.

Our Methodology

Our store location counts are based on what’s listed on the chain’s website as of December 17, 2018, if the information seemed current. While not all chains keep their website information current or make it easy to access location information, most seem to be pretty good about keeping their website information current.

If we could not determine the store location counts from the chain’s website or the website appeared outdated, we looked at recent press releases and the chain’s social media accounts.

The List of Largest Froyo Chains by Location Count

#1) MENCHIE’S: 524 locations

Menchie’s can now claim to be the world’s largest frozen yogurt chain. While other chains like Tutti Frutti and Yogen Fruz may claim to have more locations, those claims are difficult to verify or seem outdated. Menchie’s actually lists all their locations on their website. Last year, Menchie’s had 536 locations. This year, 429 locations are in the US (82%) and 95 (18%) outside the US, with Canada’s 77 locations leading the way. Menchie’s has the most locations in California (94), Texas (52), and Florida (49).

#2) YOGEN FRUZ: 494 locations

The current locations are listed on the Yogen Fruz website, but accessing them involves a crazy amount of clicking. Their website also claims to have 1,400 stores in 47 countries. This year we had the patience to click and determine the number of locations on their website. The results were surprising: 494 locations in 23 countries. Clearly, Yogen Fruz has closed many locations and many of the ones that remain open are inside movie theaters. The most Yogen Fruz locations can be found in the Dominican Republic, with 151 locations. There are 72 locations left in Canada.

#3) TUTTI FRUTTI: 400 (??) locations

It’s very difficult to guess how many Tutti Frutti locations remain open, since the website information is old and inaccurate and we’ve seen many different claims. The Tutti Frutti US website says that they have 550 locations but the Tutti Frutti Australian website says they have 700 locations. We suspect the actual number is considerably less than 550. We’ll take a wild guess that it’s closer to 400. The US website shows 190 locations. They still have locations in other countries.

#4) SWEETFROG: 342 locations

sweetFrog is one of the rare froyo chains that actually grew this year. Last year, we counted 326 sweetFrog locations. This year, they had 334 locations in the US (98%) and 8 outside (in the Dominican Republic). The website makes it easy to access a list of all their locations.

#5) YOGURTLAND: 320 locations

Yogurtland’s website makes it difficult to access a list of all current locations. The most recent Yogurtland press release, dated late September 2018, states that,”Presently, Yogurtland has more than 320 locations across the U.S., Australia, Dubai, Guam, Myanmar, Oman, Singapore, Thailand, and Venezuela.” This is same number given on their website said last year December. We know Yogurtland locations closed and opened but we don’t know exactly how many, unfortunately. Yogurtland opened in Oman this year.

#6) TCBY: 300 locations

A list of current locations isn’t readily accessible on the TCBY website. When one clicks on the TCBY International list of locations, the message says the site can’t be reached. According to a TCBY press release dated December 2018, TCBY has over 300 locations. The majority of the locations are in the US.

#7) YOGORINO: 170 locations

Yogorino moved from #9 largest to #7 this year, with 170 locations, 4 more than in 2017. It still has the most locations, 106 (62%) in its home country, Italy. They opened their first location in the Philippines this year.

#8) LLAOLLAO: 163 locations

Llaollao is the dominant player in its home country of Spain, with 104 locations in Spain (64%). This year they made good on their promise to return to Singapore, opening 3 locations. They also opened their first location in the US, in Houston, Texas, with another one to come in Miami, Florida. Llaollao had 162 locations last year.

#9) ORANGE LEAF: 156 locations

Orange Leaf is back to being a US only chain, according to its website. Their website provides easy access to a list of locations. Last year, Orange Leaf had 188 locations. This year, they had the most stores in Texas, with 50 locations (32%). Last year, they had the most locations in Oklahoma, where they are based.

#10) PINKBERRY: 151 locations

Pinkberry listed 151 locations on their website, 41 in the US (27%) and 110 outside the US (73%). It had the most locations in the US (41), Peru (20), Kuwait (16) and United Arab Emirates (16). Last year, Pinkberry had 174 locations. The Pinkberry website does not list any of the Second Cup locations in Canada that offer Pinkberry or the places that carry Pinkberry but are not Pinkberry stores (the Pinkberry Foodservice program members). If you count the 85 Second Cup locations in Canada that serve Pinkberry, that would give Pinkberry 236 locations, good enough for #7 on this list of largest froyo chains.
