Tips for Taking Better Froyo Pictures

21 Choices

Now that you’ve been practicing your swirling, it’s time to impress everyone with pictures of your froyo creations. We gathered some tips for beginner food photographers.

Consider the Composition, Try Various Angles

When taking a picture, you basically have three types of angles to choose from: directly overhead, from the side or head on/straight. Here’s a tip from Penny De Los Santos, an award-winning documentary photographer, “When exploring different angles, try to keep the featured food the main element in the image. Be careful of adding any elements that may compete with or distract from your primary subject.”

Use Natural Light

Use natural light when possible and avoid using your cell phone’s flash. Malcolm Bedell of ProFoodBlogger.com recommends that photographers “Avoid shooting in direct sunlight, as this can cause the same harsh shadows that a flash can. In general, we’ve found it best to shoot during daylight hours, near a window, preferably with a gauzy curtain to help filter the light.”

Food Photography Tips for Froyo

We’ve looked at thousands of pictures of frozen yogurt. We’ve found that the best looking froyo pics have the following characteristics:

  • Don’t wait to take a picture…if it’s melted or half eaten, the froyo won’t look as attractive. It looks better when you haven’t started eating it yet.
  • Keep the froyo cup clean (no drippings on outside or inside of cup)
  • A fuller cup of froyo with or without toppings looks better than a mostly empty cup
  • Don’t include people in the picture – the focus should be on your cup of froyo. Pick a neutral background.
  • Spoons are fine especially when they add a pop of color or have a cute design
  • Show the froyo cup from the side or straight on view if it’s nice looking (i.e., has an attractive logo). If there is no logo on the cup, show the shop in the background or the shop business card.
  • Don’t bury your frozen yogurt in toppings. A few toppings, colorful toppings neatly placed around the swirl look best.
  • Tall, pretty froyo swirls look nicer than short swirls. This is where you can show off your new, improved swirling skills. Make sure the picture includes the top of the swirl.
  • Make sure fruit toppings look fresh
