September is Frozen Yogurt Toppings Month

Happy September! It’s Frozen Yogurt Toppings Month at the IFYA and we’re going to be talking about toppings all month. We’ll have interviews with innovators in the frozen yogurt toppings field. Plus, we will announce our first giveaway very soon and it involves toppings of course.

Most frozen yogurt fans to add plenty of toppings to their creations. It’s clear that people love their frozen yogurt toppings. A frozen yogurt poll that asked “How many different types of toppings would you want in your perfect cup of fro-yo?” found that 85% of voters wanted 1 – 5 toppings in their cup. Only 13% didn’t want any toppings with their frozen yogurt.

Have you noticed that most frozen yogurt stores offer the same toppings? Have you experienced some toppings fatigue? It’s fine to have standard toppings but why not add a couple that are different and can’t be found at every frozen yogurt store?

Creative Toppings

Some of the creative toppings we’ve encountered at shops include:

  • Fresh veggies (cucumbers, carrots)
  • Crunchy toppings (caramelized almonds, popcorn, bagel chips, potato chips, Sun Chips, toasted breadcrumbs)
  • Seeds (chia, flax, pumpkin, sunflower)
  • Asian toppings (aloe vera jelly, young coconut, tapioca balls, matcha green tea powder)
  • Warm toppings (warm brown rice, steel cut oatmeal, fruit cobblers)
  • Unusual syrups (rose, vanilla cardamom), olive oil, balsamic vinegar, chocolate magic shell
  • Stewed rhubarb
  • Flavored whipped cream
  • Pop Rocks
  • Bacon bits
  • Chili powder
  • Cake and cookies (Choco Pie, Moon Pie, meringue cookies, biscotti)
  • Hot roasted nuts
  • Chocolate dipped whole fresh strawberries

Frozen yogurt shops outside of the US offer toppings such as cotton candy, digestive biscuits, housemade chocolate bark, macarons, soon papdi, espresso, speculoos, muesli, etc.

There are so many potential new toppings out there, such as sesame seeds, poppyseeds, crystallized ginger, citrus zest, taffy, quinoa, baklava, palmiers, basil seeds, cactus honey powder, flaky Chinese peanut candy, etc. It’s easy enough to try out a new cereal, new type of granola or seasonal fruit. We like how some frozen yogurt shops get their frozen yogurt toppings from local suppliers, such as a granola and cake from a local bakery. Seasonal toppings are a wonderful idea as well.

Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Candy Bars are back for a limited time, through September and General Mills has brought back two monster cereals, Fruit Brute and Fruity Yummy Mummy, for the fall/Halloween season.

We’re challenging frozen yogurt shops to add more creative toppings this month. Which new toppings would you like to see?
