A Look at Frozen Yogurt Trends

It’s June and time to celebrate National Frozen Yogurt Month, Week and Day. TCBY started the tradition by sponsoring National Frozen Yogurt Month, National Frozen Yogurt Week (the first week of June) and National Frozen Yogurt Day (the first “Sundae/Sunday” in June) back in 1993.

Every June we look at frozen yogurt trends as captured by Google Trends. Interest in frozen yogurt is measured by the number of searches for the term, frozen yogurt. Interest in frozen yogurt in the US peaked in July 2012 and has been gradually declining ever since. The decline was small in 2013, quite large in 2014 and moderate in 2015.

Like last year, the interest is the highest in the United States (which has the most frozen yogurt shops), followed by Greece, Canada, and Australia. Hong Kong, which was in fifth place last year, slipped to sixth, while Denmark captured fifth place. In Greece, interest in frozen yogurt has been declining since the summer of 2012. In Canada, interest peaked in June 2013.

At the state level, the top 3 states remained unchanged in 2015: 1. Massachusetts, 2. Washington and 3. California. However, at the city level, Los Angeles has recaptured #1 place as measured by search volume, followed by San Francisco, Boston, New York and Seattle.

What are people searching for? The most popular related search terms are 1. frozen yogurt recipe, 2. frozen yogurt calories in 2014 and 2015.

Judging from the number of new froyo shop openings and froyo shop closings, interest and demand for frozen yogurt is leveling off. It certainly isn’t growing the way it used to, although the growth rate is higher less mature and less competitive markets outside of the US.
