Froyo and Chinese New Year

Llaollao

Happy Chinese New Year! Today marks the first day of the Year of the Rooster. Frozen yogurt shops are common in Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, as well as countries with large Chinese populations like Singapore.

Some froyo shops have special Chinese New Year promotions. This year Llaollao (Batam, Indonesia) is handing out red envelopes with every purchase of Rp 100,000. The envelopes have coupons for Llaollao. Llaollao Hong Kong gave out free froyo to the winners of their recent Chinese New Year contest.

Chinese inspired froyo flavors include Durian, Red Bean, Black Sesame, Milk Tea, Soy, Tofu, and Lychee. Chinese inspired toppings include rice balls, tapioca pearls, red bean, filled mochi, pineapple cake, grass jelly, taro balls, and sesame brittle. At Scaredy Cat in Hong Kong, you can get soft serve stuffed inside a pineapple bun. And yes, some shops like Velvet Frozen Yogurt in Singapore have Chinese New Year frozen yogurt cakes. They’re perfect for family gatherings.

Recently, Hong Kong style egg puff waffles (aka egg puffs, puffle cones, HK waffles) have been gaining popularity outside of Hong Kong. They’ve been spotted in Australia, Canada, Portugal, and the US. The egg puffs are crispy and soft. Delicious!
