Alpine Chill: New Frozen Yogurt Brand Competitor in San Diego County

A drive through San Diego County is peppered with the cheery signs and bright interiors of chain frozen yogurt stores. Pinkberry, Menchie’s, FruttiTutti and other big-name chains have staked their claim, but they have been met with unexpected competition. Customers seeking the sweet, chilly tang of frozen yogurt have been flocking to independent shops for a novelty experience and change of atmosphere. These local shops have proved that small businesses can still be fierce competition for larger chains.

Alpine Chill, the latest local frozen yogurt shop to make its grand entrance, opened its doors on July 26th, 2014. Customers stepping inside the doors were surprised by a delightful change of pace. While most frozen yogurt shops rely on minimalist design, Alpine Chill turned to interior designer Mindful Design Consulting for a refreshing take on a classic ice cream parlor.

Alpine Chill’s owners wanted to create a community-oriented shop for the small San Diego suburb of Alpine. The finished blue, white and cherry red interior harkens back to the good old days while modernizing the classic soda fountain appeal. Customers take in the cool mint-and-chrome decor while perched on sleek chairs and brightly cushioned stools with easy access to phone charging stations. Pendulum lights alternate between chrome classics and colorful glass.

The gems of the parlor are the yogurt dispensers and the gleaming front counter. A bright blue Corian surround and cherry wood casework makes the chrome dispensers pop. Up front, a minty green counter sits beneath striking accent menu board which is a mirror.

“It was supposed to be a chalk board,” Mindful Design Consulting notes, “but we are happy it was substituted by the mirror as it created an illusion of a larger space.”

Alpine Chill is not Mindful Design Consulting’s first frozen yogurt shop design. They have designed for over 30 frozen yogurt shops in the US, Canada and China. Locally, they were behind the colorful, contemporary interior of My Yogurt in San Diego’s Gaslamp district. The firm, which specializes in enhancing customer experience, hopes to bring its expertise in branding and eco-friendly design to even more shops in the future.

Alpine Chill is located near freeway 8 and an easy stop for travelers on their way to the casino in Viejas or Julian. Whether they live around the corner or are just passing through, customers can kick back and cool off in Alpine Chill’s comfortable atmosphere.
