A Look at Frozen Yogurt in Sweden

Frozen Dreams The Origins of Frozen Yogurt in Sweden

The stirrings of interest in bringing frozen yogurt (or yoghurt) to Sweden began in 2011-2012. In 2011, two friends joined forces and created Yollibox, a packaged all natural frozen yogurt product sold in markets, which they launched in 2012. In 2012, the owners of the Original Swedish Frozen Yogurt Factory were planning the first frozen yogurt shop in Sweden. The Original Swedish Frozen Yogurt Factory opened at the Gallerian Stockholm shopping center in 2013. It was American style (meaning self-serve and pay by weight) but with a Swedish touch.

Frozen Yogurt Expands in Sweden

Frozen yogurt shops like Frozenplanet, Yoogout, Frozzy, Yogurt Shopen, Yo & Berry and Yogiboost then spread to smaller cities throughout Sweden. The majority of these shops were American style (i.e., self-serve). Chillbox, the Greek chain, has an outpost in Stockholm.

Yollibox was successful in capturing the interest in the Swedish consumer and other frozen yogurt products were introduced at retailer markets, including Holly & Dan’s organic frozen yoghurt and Gute Glass.frozenplanet

Coop, which has 665 stores throughout Sweden, offers self-serve frozen yogurt with toppings. It’s unclear how many Coop locations have frozen yogurt machines.

Swedish frozen yogurt has some distinctive flavors (e.g., licorice) and Swedish toppings like gingerbread, cloud berry and many kinds of Swedish candies.

Swedish frozen yogurt sellers face a cool climate and the popularity of soft serve ice cream, which is widely available and widely consumed.
