2019 Froyo Flavor and Trends Forecast

We cataloged the new froyo flavors that were introduced last December in our post, New Froyo Flavors Introduced in 2018. Now we’re ready to look ahead, at emerging flavor and product trends.

Indian Flavors

Comax Flavors predicts that Indian flavors will be big this year. We noticed many chai and turmeric beverages at the Coffee Fest last fall. Chai is not a common frozen yogurt flavor, though a few places do offer chai froyo, including Red Mango (Chai frozen yogurt), Yogen Fruz (Chai Latte U Sensations), Menchie’s (Spiced Chai Latte froyo), and Yoga-urt (Calming Coconut Chai vegan froyo). Some of the better known Indian dessert flavors are Mango Lassi, Gulab Jamun, Kulfi, and Falooda. Indian flavors might incorporate rosewater, cardamom, turmeric, and garam masala.

Fermented and Pickled Flavors

Comax Flavors also predicts that 2019 will be a big year for pickles and fermented foods and beverages (e.g., kombucha, hard cider). People who like frozen yogurt seem to like kombucha too, perhaps because both are cultured/fermented. Kombucha could add a refreshing lightness to froyo.

Yoga-urt makes its Mango Sunrise vegan froyo with kombucha and offers kombucha floats. Pickled fruits have been used in ice cream, so they could easily be added to froyo.

Hemp/CBD Infusions

Last year, Yogland in the UK created the world’s first vegan cannabis-infused frozen yogurt, while Bella’s Frozen Yogurt in St. Louis, MO collaborated with CBD Kratom for a CBD froyo pop-up. Kokus in NYC served a CBD-enhanced cacao sauce. However, the legality of CBD is still unclear in the US, where the FDA has stated that CBD is illegal to add to food or health products without FDA approval. On the other hand, hulled hemp seeds, hemp seed protein, and hemp seed oil are safe foods that do not require additional FDA approval.

Plant-Based Desserts

We’ve seen plant-based desserts growing every year for the last few years. Whole Foods also predicts that plant-based desserts will continue to enjoy popularity. Ice cream is now made with many different bases, including avocado, coconut water, and hummus. Last year, Yogurtland introduced its first dairy alternative frozen yogurt, Coconut Cream Pie and Dannon YoCream introduced its first dairy alternative soft serve, Silk Almondmilk.
