2016 Chain Store Count

The IFYA Froyo Chain Store Location Count is back with the 2016 edition.

Our store counts are based on what’s listed on the chain’s website when that information seems current. We also looked at recent press releases from the chain for their store counts and social media accounts. Keep in mind that the store counts are approximate. Shops open and close all the time.

In summary, there were few changes in the order of the list this year. However, Red Mango, Orange Leaf and Pinkberry’s domestic location counts declined the most. Other chains on the list are roughly the same size as this time last year. The top 10 chains accounted for 4,335 locations.

For last year’s results, see our 2015 Store Count post.

Largest frozen yogurt chains:

#1) YOGEN FRUZ: 1400 locations

Yogen Fruz remains in the top spot. There are “over 1400 locations operating in 47 around the world,” according to the Yogen Fruz website. Last year the YF website said they had over 1400 locations in 46 countries. The list of stores is difficult to access on the Yogen Fruz website. The majority of Yogen Fruz locations are in Canada.

#2) TUTTI FRUTTI FROZEN YOGURT: 550 locations

The Tutti Frutti US Facebook page says that there are “over 550 stores nation and world wide!” Last year the US Facebook page also said that they had 550 stores. The Tutti Frutti website currently says they have over 700 stores that are open or upcoming. Furthermore, the Tutti Frutti Canada LinkedIn page says that they have “660+ locations in over 30 countries.” In conclusion, we’re not sure how many locations they have but we’ll go with the smaller number to be conservative.

#3) MENCHIE’S FROZEN YOGURT: 548 locations

Menchie’s remains North America’s largest self-serve froyo chain. Their website makes it easy to see all the current locations. We counted 418 locations in the US (vs. 373 in 2015), 106 locations in Canada (vs. 111 in 2015) and 24 outside of North America. California has the most Menchie’s locations, with 82 locations currently open.

#4) TCBY: 391 locations

Once the world’s largest frozen yogurt chain, TCBY has been shrinking for years. TCBY’s website states that they have over 360 locations in the US. We counted the listed locations on their website and found 295 locations in the US, 92 locations in Canada and 4 locations outside of North America. TCBY managed to grow by expanding their footprint in Canada, primarily in movie theaters.

#5) SWEETFROG: 347 locations

sweetFrog was founded in 2009 in Virginia. According to a mid-November press release, sweetFrog has “340 stores including both company-owned, franchise and independently licensed locations either open or under contract in twenty-four states in the U.S, Dominican Republic, United Kingdom and Egypt.” Their website made it easy to manually count the locations. We counted 347 locations on the sweetFrog website, 339 of these were in the US. They had a few more locations open (352) last year. Virginia has the most sweetFrog locations, with 87 shops.

#6) YOGURTLAND: 300 locations

Yogurtland continued to aggressively expand in  California this year. They didn’t fare as well on the East Coast, where they closed several locations this year. It’s difficult to access a full list of locations on their website. The most recent company press release to mention a number of locations says there are “more than 300 locations in 19 states.” Based on what information we found, we believe they have about 300 locations. Furthermore, they’re also thriving in the biggest frozen yogurt market, California.

#7) ORANGE LEAF FROZEN YOGURT: 232 locations

Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, based in Oklahoma, calls itself America’s Frozen Yogurt. The majority of Orange Leaf locations are in the US. According to a September press release, Orange Leaf has “approximately 300 locations” in the US and Australia. We manually counted the locations on their website and found 232 locations. Texas had the most Orange Leaf locations, with 55 shops. There were no locations listed in Australia but there was one international location listed, in Mexico. Last year, Orange Leaf had nearly 300 locations.

#8) PINKBERRY: 227 locations

Pinkberry was acquired in late 2015 by Kahala. While Pinkberry’s domestic presence continues to shrink, they have been expanding in other countries. It’s worth noting that there are more Pinkberry locations outside of the US (130 locations this year vs. 113 last year) now than there are domestic locations (97 locations this year vs. 139 last year). They’ve done well in the Middle East, Peru and Japan. The newestlocation just opened in the Philippines on December 2.

#9) LLAOLLAO: 181 locations

Llaollao was founded in 2009 and is the largest chain in Spain. It’s been growing like crazy but has no locations in the US. We counted 181 locations listed on their website, with 98 of these in Spain and 25 in Singapore. Llaollao just opened their first location in the Philippines this year. Last year there were 182 locations.

#10) RED MANGO USA: 160 locations

This was a quiet year for Red Mango. According to a recent press release, “Based in Dallas and with more than 300 locations across the U.S., Mexico, El Salvador and Uruguay, Red Mango is a rapidly-expanding retailer of all-natural frozen yogurt, light foods and fresh cold-squeezed juices.” The Red Mango USA website says “there are over 200 locations nationwide.” We counted the locations listed on the Red Mango USA website and found 160 locations, including five in El Salvador. No locations in Mexico or Uruguay were listed. Last year our count found 177 locations on the Red Mango website.

This store count does not include Red Mango International locations which are listed on a different website (the International website doesn’t seem up-to-date since it lists locations that closed years ago).

We’re also keeping an eye on large chains like Yogorino, which has over 100 locations.
